I’m definitely an “everything has its place” kind of person when it comes to keeping the van organized… but sometimes Mondays just have a way of doing their own thing. 😂

Started the day looking organized and professional. Ended it looking like I threw an entire plumbing supply house in the back of the van. 😂

But the jobs got done, the van got cleaned back up at the end of the day, and she’s organized and ready to do it all over again tomorrow! 🔧💪

Sometimes water heaters aren’t exactly in the most fun spaces to get in and out! 😂

This one was tucked away in a second-floor bathroom behind the laundry area. To get access, the door had to come off and both the dryer and washing machine had to be moved out of the way.

Sometimes replacing the water heater is the easy part—it’s getting to it that makes the job interesting! 🔧💪

How it started vs. how it ended 😂

Spent a little time after work today cleaning up and sorting through the scrap pile. Copper, brass, fittings and everything else that seems to accumulate faster than you realize.

Not the most exciting part of the job, but it sure is satisfying getting it all cleaned up, separated and ready for the scrap yard. Nothing goes to waste! 🔧♻️

I’ve always enjoyed the business and financial side of things just as much as doing the actual work.

Even as a kid, I was always coming up with little neighborhood “businesses,” and I found the behind-the-scenes side fascinating—figuring out costs, keeping track of money, and seeing what I could make.

That really hasn’t changed. I handle all of the day-to-day bookkeeping for Veteran Odd Jobs, along with scheduling, ordering materials, keeping track of expenses, watching the numbers, and planning ahead.

The numbers may be a little bigger now and there’s definitely more responsibility, but I still genuinely enjoy that side of it. Running my own business has given me the opportunity to combine two things I’ve always enjoyed—working with my hands and the business side that happens behind the scenes.

And a big shoutout to Matt at Dirigo Bookkeeping LLC for helping me get everything set up properly in the beginning and organized so I had a solid foundation to build from. Having that guidance early on made a huge difference!

I’m constantly being asked if I know any good painters, carpenters, and drywall contractors, so I’d really like to build a solid list of trusted local people to send work to.

Ran new hot and cold water lines with individual shutoffs inside, then piped everything outside in copper with separate drain-down points to make winterizing easy.

Attic work today! Definitely not for everyone… starting to think it might not even be for me 😂

Spent some time crawling around insulating exhaust fan ductwork and taking care of a few odds and ends. Tight spaces, plenty of insulation, and a headlamp putting in overtime.

Not the most glamorous part of the job, but somebody’s gotta do it! 🔧

Not every job goes perfectly, and I think it’s important to own the mistakes just as much as the successes.

On a previous visit, I accidentally damaged the porcelain on this undermount sink. Today I went back with a brand-new sink, got it properly mounted and took care of everything at no charge to the customer.

While I was there, the customer also had me replace the cartridges in both faucets.

Mistakes happen in this line of work. You may not see many businesses posting about theirs, but I believe how you handle a mistake says a lot more than pretending they never happen. Own it, make it right, and take care of your customers.
