These are some recent small paintings in my little sketchbook I take to the clinic with me when I get wasp allergy shots and have to hang around for a half hour.

I'll be leaving these around town as part of the art abandonment movement. Watch for them in public places! You might find one in a plant or on a store shelf.

I've been quiet but am still painting. I was riding my trike when I saw the barred owl land on a basketball hoop. A friend told me the owl was definitely Larry Bird, the Olympic basketball star from a while ago. The resemblance is uncanny!

I painted the fox to work on dramatic light. Did it work?

Also some field roses to work on getting a more 3D effect.

Some recent paintings of Hedlund Huskies at Points Unknown in Hovland, MN.

Zhing, in the kennel, is being safely driven back home after a 4-day misadventure involving slipping his collar at the vet clinic where he'd just been neutered (and was stoned on painkillers). He flipped into survival mode and ran, terrified" away from his people, through the forests of Ely.

Hundreds of people helped track him, put out scent markers and food to lure him. It was very traumatic to Zhing and his humans, and is now safely back home, living the sleddog life he loves with his kennelmates and human servants.

Winnow was one of 3 new Hedlund Husky puppies. She had a fatal lung condition.

We spent a couple days up north in January learning all about dogsledding, meeting the sled pets, and going on a daylong sledding adventure.

I've been playing with a limited color palette of single-pigment paints, which give a vibrant translucent effect, and mix beautifully with almost no possibility of making mud.

Then I applied gold, silver, and copper leaf. I tried to keep them abstract, but darned if I didn't go on autopilot and paint in trees and grasses on that second painting.

Let me know if you'd like a demo of the process or more information on the specific paints. I had so much fun with these.

This is a completely different color palette from my pet painting palette, which has a lot of granulating colors.

One of my first inspirations for learning to paint was an art show at St. Paul's Monastery by Kelly Kruse. She paints huge, abstract works with a lot of color, texture, and metal leaf. They are usually based on interpretation of Christian scripture and Catholic teachings, though anyone could love her works.

These are tiny by comparison, on 10" x 10" Baohong Academy paper.

I'll be back soon to finish up the tutorial with the blue-eyed cat. I've been recovering from an unfortunate encounter with a nest of yellow jackets. I got stung hundreds of times, rode in the ambulance to the ER, then got shot full of steroids, antihistamines, epinephrine, and other helpful medications that brought my crashing blood pressure back up to normal.

A couple days after that, my hubby brought me to the Pacita Abad exhibit at the Walker Arts Center in Mpls. The artwork was fabulous and might inspire me to revisit my days of using fabric to make art.
