🕊️ In Loving Memory of The Mall Carpet Unit 20 🕊️
1980 – 2026
It is with heavy hearts (and lightened air quality) that we announce the passing (removal) of the last of our beloved blue carpet today.
Installed with pride during the grand opening of the mall in 1980, this hardworking floor covering faithfully served generations of shoppers at the lego/toy store, the dance studio, the frame shop, numerous department stores, and now our lovely indoor playground. It served as a faithful neighbor to Radio Shack for many years (may you also rest in peace) and our beloved Peebles. , strollers, skateboarders, spilled sodas, chewing gum, mystery stains, and countless pairs of squeaky mall-walking sneakers.
Over its 46-year career, it survived:
* 17 million footsteps
* 4,000 dropped sodas
* 1 rice sensory bin
* 1 dead bird that fell out if the ceiling
* At least 13 ceiling leaks
* 37 unidentified sticky substances
* Dropped and spilled painy
* And decades of questionable cleaning methods
Though originally blue, it eventually evolved into a unique shade known only as “Commercial Grayish Regret.”
Specialists declared there was nothing more they could do after repeated shampooings, vacuumings, and desperate applications of carpet powder failed to revive it. In its final days, it held together largely through 1980s carpet glue from hell and decades of embedded dirt.
A private removal ceremony will be held soon. In lieu of flowers, please consider wiping your feet on the rugs upon entry and simply enjoy the fact that your socks will no longer turn black after walking across it.
Rest in peace, old friend.
You really tied the mall together… mostly because you were glued down.
