🎤 You Don't Have to Say You Love Me - Elvis Presley (1970)
Originally an Italian entry called "Io Che Non Vivo (Senza Te)," written by Vito Pallavicini and Pino Donaggio for a 1965 song contest, before Vicki Wickham and Simon Napier-Bell wrote English lyrics for Dusty Springfield's 1966 version - a hit so big it got the whole album renamed after it. Elvis recorded his own take June 6, 1970 during a marathon Nashville session that produced 35 masters in five days. His producer, Felton Jarvis, was happy with the second take, but Elvis insisted on doing a third before he'd let it go.

Elvis first attempted his own version in 1963, but the real controversy came a year later - Elvis reportedly told singer Johnny Rivers he planned to release "Memphis" as his next single, and when Rivers rushed his own cover out first, it became a #2 hit, leaving Elvis's inner circle believing for decades that he'd been deliberately beaten to the punch. Chuck Berry himself publicly defended Rivers, saying he wasn't the type to race out and steal a song from anyone.

Stan Kesler and Bill Taylor wrote "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone," and Sam Phillips cut it with Elvis at Sun Studio, released April 10, 1955, with "Baby Let's Play House" on the flip side. This one was among the first Elvis tracks to actually feature drums, a small technical shift that ended up mattering more than the song itself, which stayed mostly regional. The B-side went on to become his first record to chart nationally in country. Funny how often the side nobody expected to matter carries the actual milestone.

Released as a single in 1968, it stalled at #71 on the Hot 100. That same year, Elvis re-recorded the song for the '68 Comeback Special and gave it a completely different life, backed by raw energy instead of a forgettable movie plot. Joy Byers wrote it, one of sixteen songs she gave Elvis during his soundtrack years. 🎸 Same song, same year, and only one version anyone remembers now.

Willie Nelson wrote "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground" in 1976, then sat on it for four years before it landed on the Honeysuckle Rose soundtrack in 1980. Bob Dylan liked it enough to record his own version during the Infidels sessions in 1983, then left it off the album. Alison Krauss and Chris Stapleton both cut versions decades later. Nelson has never confirmed who the "angel" actually is, dedicating it onstage over the years to his son Billy and to his ex-wife Connie alike. 🎸 That kind of vagueness is usually a flaw. Written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller for "Jailhouse Rock," this is one of the rare Elvis recordings where he actually plays electric bass himself, cut May 3, 1957 at Radio Recorders. Leiber and Stoller reportedly wrote this song along with "Jailhouse Rock," "Treat Me Nice," and "I Want to Be Free" all in one single afternoon. Buddy Holly later covered it for his own 1958 self-titled album, and his version charted in Britain in 1961 - two years after Holly's own death in the plane crash that also killed Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper.

Del Shannon actually released this song first, on his 1961 album Runaway, months before Elvis ever touched it. Nobody remembers Shannon's version today. Elvis's cover came out two months later and became the massive hit instead, reaching #4 on the Billboard chart. During the recording session, Elvis got stuck on the piano part and called songwriter Mort Shuman in the middle of the night for help getting it right. Doc Pomus and Shuman also wrote "Little Sister" and "Surrender" for Elvis, but this remains one of the few times Presley ever picked up the phone to ask a songwriter directly for help.

The song bombed commercially at the time - country radio balked at how straightforwardly it rocked, and a live Houston broadcast documented the crowd barely reacting to it, especially compared to the frenzy over its B-side, "Blue Moon of Kentucky."

Willie Nelson recorded the entire Red Headed Stranger album in three days for about $20,000, and Columbia Records executives thought it sounded unfinished, badly under-produced for country radio. They released the single anyway, with modest expectations. It crept slowly up the charts before hitting #1 in October 1975, and the sparse little album it came from went on to sell 2.5 million copies. Fred Rose had written the song back in 1945, and it had already been recorded by Roy Acuff and Hank Williams, but neither made it a hit the way Nelson's stripped-down version finally did.
