Released 55 years ago today: “Songs for Beginners” by 29-year-old Graham Nash. After over six years with hit-making pop group The Hollies and two with ‘super group’ CSN / CSNY, this was the English songwriter’s debut solo LP. Its songs largely dealt with his recent relationships with Joni Mitchell and his bandmates, but some were socio-political, like “Military Madness” + “Chicago”. The self-produced album reached #15 Billboard ( #13 UK) and reviews are excellent. Many associates contributed including new girlfriend Rita Coolidge, Neil Young, David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, David Lindley, Dave Mason, John Barbata + others. Fun fact: Graham will be performing at Orpheum Madison on July 20. More in Comments.

Released 35 years ago today: “Seamonsters” by The Wedding Present. Led by 31-year old songwriter David Gedge, this third album by the English indie rock / noise pop band was recorded in ten days by Steve Albini at Pachyderm Studio in Minnesota. Fun fact: Gedge keeps his band active to this day: They recently issued the new six-song “Maxi EP” on vinyl. More in Comments.

45 years ago, Bill Nelson released “Quit Dreaming and Get on the Beam”. To put in context, the 27-year-old English art-pop songwriter had already led his guitar-rock band Be-Bop Deluxe through five studio LPs plus one with his new wave band Red Noise. He had even issued a solo album as a teenager. This one was planned as the second Red Noise LP but after EMI dropped them from the label roster, Quit Dreaming… evolved into a solo project in 1979, but its release was delayed two years. When it finally dropped in May 1981, it reached #7 on the UK chart, boosted by singles “Do You Dream in Colour?” + “Youth of Nation on Fire”. Reviews are excellent. Fun fact: The first 10K copies included a free second LP of instrumental music “Sounding the Ritual Echo (Atmospheres for Dreaming)” which pointed to another range of genre avenues he would explore in depth over a long, prolific (and still active) recording career. Released 40 years ago: “October File” by Die Kreuzen. This second album by the Milwaukee (originally Rockford) post-hardcore / alt-rock band was co-produced with Corey Rusk in Detroit for Touch and Go Records; it earned very good reviews. They would issue two more studio albums before breaking up in 1992. Many artists later cited influence from the band, inspiring a tribute album in 2005, reunion shows in 2012-13, and last summer "Don't Say Please : The Oral History of Die Kreuzen” a book by Sahan Jayasuriya was published and well-received. Released 45 years ago today: “Neuromantic” by Yukihiro Takahashi. This self-produced third solo LP from the 28-year-old drummer, songwriter & keyboardist of pioneering Tokyo technopop trio Yellow Magic Orchestra is practically a YMO album itself, featuring his (then still current) bandmates Haruomi Hosono & Ryuichi Sakamoto. Many others contributed however, including Roxy Music members Andy Mackay & Phil Manzanera. This synthpop album earned good reviews and is a fan-favorite. Cover art is a self portrait.
