Leeanne Maltbie brought together fabrics, discarded neckties, printed paper, beads and even a section of a walnut in this collage entitled, "Squares # 3". She then sewed and embroidered embellishments to complete the piece.

Preparing for this afternoon’s marbling on fabric class.

SIFS aspires to connect todays students to historic crafts. We had a super example of that in our marbling class today. Marbling teacher Andrew Preston demonstrated the technique of the Spanish wave. John Nyberg shared a stunning example in a book from the History and Art Center collection. 21st century meet the 19th century!

While traditional marbling roots stretch back to 15th- and 16th-century Turkey and the broader Islamic world (ebru), distinct European patterns like the Spanish wave were formalized and named during the expansion of fine bookbinding workshops in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Andrew also demonstrated nonpareil marbling seen in another History center book below. Nonpareil marbling is a classic paper marbling design featuring fine, evenly spaced parallel arches or ripples. The word "nonpareil" is French for "without equal" or "matchless".
