The sold-out show at Shannon Hall at UW Madison’s Memorial Union showcased the band’s remarkable ability to create a wall of sound that was amplified by the theater’s exceptional acoustics and seating arrangement. This allowed the vocal harmonies to resonate clearly throughout the performance.
During the set, which was supported by two of Tweedy’s sons and their childhood friends, the frontman encouraged the crowd to get on the floor and make some noise, fostering a creative and lively atmosphere.
The 26-song setlist maintained an upbeat and energetic tone throughout the night, seamlessly blending tracks from Tweedy’s other solo albums with a few selections from his side project, simply known as Tweedy. Additionally, the set included a few tracks from “Twilight Override.”
After concluding the main set, Tweedy returned for a five-song encore that featured the shimmering title track, “Twilight Override.” Throughout the tour, he has made a conscious effort to play one cover unique to each stop, incorporating elements with a touch of local resonance.
“Tonight, we have two songs,” Tweedy announced to the crowd. “There’s sort of one for me and one for you. You’ll see why.”
At this point, Macie Stewart and Sima Cunningham stepped to the mic for a dreamy rendition of “Mr. Sandman,” a song made famous by the Sheboygan-based group The Chordettes. The encore took an unexpected turn with Tweedy’s eclectic cover of James Brown’s “Cold Sweat.” He fully embraced his best James Brown impression, delivering a performance that left the audience in awe.
