On This Day in 1933: The First Drive-In Theater Opens

On June 6, 1933, the world's first drive-in theater opened in Camden, New Jersey. Created by Richard Hollingshead, the outdoor theater allowed moviegoers to watch films from the comfort of their own automobiles.

The idea quickly became popular and helped create a new form of entertainment across the United States. Drive-in theaters grew in number during the following decades and became a familiar part of American culture.

Today, the opening of the first drive-in theater is remembered as an important milestone in the history of movies and entertainment.

At the Grand we are in need of a couple of people who would be willing to work in tickets sales, concessions and light cleaning. This is a paid position and would involve working from 6:00 PM to approximately 9:30 PM (locking up at the end of the night). We are open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights.

It would not be every weekend, just a few times each month. No previous theater experience necessary, we will train. Students, adults, retirees, senior citizens are all welcome to apply. See Kris at the KLQP Radio studio, 623 W. 3rd St., downtown Madison for an application or information.

We will greatly miss Tanner Kalas at the Grand! Here he his changing the marquee for the last time. Tanner just graduated from LqPV High School, he has joined the National Guard and is moving on to new adventures in life. Stop by the Grand and wish him well. He’s working every night this weekend.
