Thank you to everyone involved in the creation, planning, and implementation of Winter is Alive! a cooler world carnival. Throughout the carnival, the city of Madison was activated and participated in nuanced conversation about climate change by artists, activists, educators, curators, community organizations, and individuals near and far who came together to respond to the global scope of the climate crisis. Huge thank you to Tamsie Ringler, Artistic founder and Director of Winter is Alive! for creating space for so many to express their perspectives in this urgent dialogue.

Winter is Alive! supported a wide array of voices and visions from April Sopkin’s art students at East High School to Jonathan Patz, the Director of the Global Health Institute. Events and projects were hosted online and onsite to support community-wide participation ranging from the Aldo Leopold Nature Center to the 30+ businesses participating in T.L. Luke’s Scavenger Hunt “We are Seeds”. Many groups and organizations shared their support through funding, publicity and consultation representing a broad range of community and conscience, from the agri/cultural, Rural Urban Flow (Sara Daleiden) to international social and environmental justice organizations such as ActionCorps (Ellie Baron). It is thanks to everyone’s dedicated involvement that this multidisciplinary event incited an international discussion on the global climate crisis.

Thank you to the faculty, students and staff of the University of Wisconsin Art Department for all of your participation and support of Winter is Alive! Aris Georgiades and Gail Simpson of Actual Size Artworks offered support from the earliest days of the project including jurying the installation projects. They proposed the first work for outdoor installation “Sad Yeti” which became one of the most popular works of the exhibition - the forlorn icon of winter and mascot of our media posts. A special thank you to Aris, Sarah FitzSimons, Tim O’Neil and the Sculpture Program who supported the development of the project through student assistantships and studio space for artist projects.

Darcy Padilla presented her photographic series “Ice” in State Street kiosks and Tom Jones was a juror for the online artist projects.

Art projects were produced by many UW-Madison art students and UW-Madison alumni including Derick Wycherly, Jeff Chelf and Derek Kiesling, Ian Van D., Bill Rice, Matthew Vivirito, Carley Schmidt and students in Henrique Nardi’s Beginning Graphic Design course. An international collaborative project with Latvian artist Ojārs Feldbergs was produced by grad sculpture students Ian Van D., Brittany Weekley, and Teresa Audet. Brittany Weekley and Marc La Pointe are our incredible Social Media crew - a dynamic duo of daily posts highlighting all of the artists, groups, makers and thinkers contributing to the project.

The support and participation of so many in the UW Art Department created a perfect winter storm - thank you!

Thank you to Ray Carruthers and TetraPAKMAN for embodying the generous sense of community and creative activism central to Winter is Alive! Ray's support in assisting with signage, as well as braving the subzero temperatures to assist with the installation of Ojārs Feldbergs' and Tamsie Ringler's installations, was greatly appreciated. Your artwork "Fashion is Forever" was remarkable and incredibly poignant. TetraPAKMAN participated as an artist, juror and activist advisor, creating the incredible “Espejito, espejito AKA charco de petróleo” (Mirror, mirror AKA oil spill) on Lake Monona. He invited participation from 350.org and the Sierra Club for the Global Cooling Generation forum. Thank you!
