Hello (Again) Madison!!
After a 10+ year hiatus in the far North, I’ve migrated south for the winter…
Perhaps the snow followed me. We are getting a healthy dose of it here and even more coming tomorrow ❄️❄️❄️!
Been enjoying seeing old and new tree friends frosted in white,
Spreading bur oaks, this amazing sycamore, and familiar Arboretum trails underfoot.
What’s old is new again, and so another adventure begins.

Art of Adventure…rolled into the Big Sky country of Montana at sunset aboard the Amtrak Empire Builder…hilltops drenched in golden hour light , and distant mountains coming into a hazy purple focus inspires. The 29 hour jaunt from Columbus / Madison to Whitefish is a slow pace for contemplation, watching the unfolding world, and attempts at watercolor. The jaunty, jerky rhythms of the rails are a challenge, the scenery whizzes by at 70 mph, so a fleeting capture is the goal.
Similar to Plein Aire…change happens so quickly.
Perhaps I’ll call it “Train air” ?

Lifelong learning at its finest! Some moments really stand out, imbued with emotion and the real value of making art. My weekly drop in Nature Sketchbook class at the Art Colony was graced with 3 generations of women today. The 101 year old grandmother tried drawing and watercolor for the first time…and did well ! So full of life and humor…it was inspirational and heartwarming to see this family enjoy the experience together.

Rare photo of the elusive Plein Air Watercolor Artist at work! Captivated by the changing sky conditions and the lines and colors of these ancient volcanic rocks…while being tortured by swarms of biting black flies, I was firmly glued to awareness of the moment.
Quick, unrefined small studies have so much value for honing in on the essence of a place, often leading to larger and more developed works. Thanks for capturing the experience!

Savoring an impromptu personal plein air/beach afternoon…I love painting in the wild! Foraging raspberries, listening to late summer crickets chirp, basking on sun warmed rocks, and dipping paint water out of Lake Superior is a direct experience you just can’t capture in a photo, but I have to believe it enriches the painting process. Summer in the far north is so short but sweet…get out there while it lasts!
