After the devastating 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, Japan launched one of the largest coastal defense projects in the world. Along parts of the northeastern coastline, engineers constructed hundreds of kilometers of reinforced seawalls and coastal barriers designed to reduce the impact of future tsunamis and storm surges. In addition to the engineered defenses, millions of trees have been planted to restore coastal forests that help stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and provide an extra buffer against waves.

The reconstruction effort, supported by the Government of Japan, blends infrastructure with ecological restoration. Coastal forests—often pine trees—work together with seawalls to absorb wave energy and protect communities behind them. While the exact length and design vary across different regions, the overall strategy reflects a broader approach to disaster resilience: combining engineering, environmental planning, and community protection to reduce future risks along Japan’s vulnerable coastline.
