John Trudell oil on canvas 12x24 In February of 1979, John burned an American flag on the steps of the FBI building in Washington, D.C., in protest of the government’s treatment of native Americans and the Sioux Nation. He said it was desecrated by racism, classism, and sexism. The American flag did not represent freedom in John’s eyes because not all were free.
24 hours later, his pregnant wife, Tina, their three children, and Tina’s mother were all killed in a house fire. BIA and BLM agents were reported to be in the area, but BIA said unknown factors caused the fire.
