Emily Goodyear creates magic with her intuitive and introspective process!

About the artist:
"My art is rooted in process—intuitive, emotive, and deeply personal. With a background in art therapy, I approach each piece as a space for release and reflection. Painting offers me a quiet counterbalance to the beautiful chaos of motherhood. It’s where I return to myself.

Color is the heartbeat of my work. I choose palettes instinctively, guided by feeling rather than formula. Whether it’s the vibrant joy of blooming flowers, the bold confidence of expressive portraits, or the layered energy of abstract pieces, I use color to translate emotion into something visible and tangible.

Each painting begins without a fixed plan. Instead, I follow where the brush leads, allowing the layers, textures, and compositions to emerge naturally. Some works are energetic and spontaneous; others are more meditative. Regardless of subject—be it florals, landscapes, figures, or abstraction—my goal is always the same: to create a moment of pause, a breath, a connection.

Ultimately, my art is not about perfection—it’s about presence. It’s about honoring the feeling in the moment and giving it a home on the canvas."

🖌️ MASTERING WOOD SCULPTURE 🖌️
Look how Sam Meeks brings "Feeding Hummingbird" to life using a block of wood and skills developed over many years!

Sam said, “15 years ago, I began to learn the intricacies of creating wildlife sculptures. There was something magical about creating life, action, and beauty from a block of wood. I honed my skills until the wood began to speak, the subject came alive, and became a constant reminder of our connection to the beauty and wonder of the wild.”

Gail says, “I have always dabbled in art, taking drawing, watercolor and oil painting classes throughout the years. However, I became immersed in pastels upon taking a class from Chris Rooney in 2010, which I continue still. She encouraged me to exhibit at the Art Festival the very first year, where my work has been selected for the Judge's Fence numerous times. I recently won an Award of Distinction, one of only six given, at the Lynchburg Art Club's June show. Come see me in Space 36 this Saturday, September 20.”

🌟 THE STORY BEHIND THE ART 🌟

Emily Flint shares: "My paintings explore motherhood, mental health, and the complex relationships of sisters. I often depict dark or heavy themes or emotions, but love to balance them with beauty or satire. As a mother of three young daughters, these themes feel urgent and personal. ‘Best Mom Ever’ shows the emotional landscape of a nursing mother who looks tired and protective. A cat watches from nearby, paw touching the mother’s shoulder, while the baby is busy doing gymnastics while nursing. A pink coffee mug reads ‘Best Mom Ever,’ and is both satirical and a statement about how mothers feel torn between doubt, guilt, and deep love."

Emily Flint is a figurative painter whose work explores the intersection of motherhood, psychological landscapes, and humankind's complicated relationship with the natural environment. Flint draws inspiration from the everyday interplay between domestic life and wild nature. Her work aims to evoke visceral emotional reactions, often featuring subjects caught between attraction and repulsion, or absurdity and seriousness. Her environment acts as both refuge and catalyst, shaping works that speak to the profound experience of motherhood, mental health, and the transformative connection with nature.

With formal training in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design and in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University, Flint's background covers multiple disciplines. Although she started in photography and taught art in Richmond Public Schools, she found her passion for painting in 2009 and has been evolving her practice ever since. Her work has been shown in galleries across the U.S. and has received multiple awards, including Best in Show at the 41st Annual Lynchburg Art Festival and the Viewer’s Choice Award at the 14th Annual Riverviews Artspace Juried Art Show. She is featured in this month’s issue of Lynchburg Living Magazine.

A Lynchburg native, Emily now lives with her husband, three young daughters, two cats, and a snake named Carlos in a heavily wooded area in Elon, Virginia. She is the Marketing Chair and Secretary of the Board of the Lynchburg Art Club.
