The WoodFisch

The WoodFisch custom and original woodworking projects The WoodFisch is not the actual name of any person - it is a fun “Nom De Plume” for Kim Fischer. Could even be “Mr.

He goes by either “Kim” or “WoodFisch” - your choice. WoodFisch” or even “The WoodFisch"

Friends have asked WoodFisch if he is retired since he could be of retirement age. His reply is, “No, I am NOT retired.” He is prone to be a little short with words. He believes that retirement connotes an abundance of free time. There is no free time for the WoodFisch. And why should there be free time when

within lies a BURNING DESIRE to create objects made out of wood? The WoodFisch name is fairly recent. Known previously only as Kim, he led a professional life in the varied fields of construction management. During that time woodworking was always in the background. Now, no longer in the background, it prowls the earth for more wood to devour. With saws. The WoodFisch has built a most excellent working space and is ready to create for you.

A friend brought twelve Woodfisch pipes to The Folk Collaborative in McCaysville, GA. These are the first Woodfisch pipes to be placed into a retail setting. The store owners were excited about their arrival and confident that all of them would sell.

The Folk Collaborative is at the convergence of NC, TN, and GA, is 1.5 hrs from Atlanta, and is a popular day trip attraction.

The Gracefisch is the sleekest and most sensual of all the Woodfisch pipes. All the lines flow smoothly.

Graceful are its curves, and from this form springs its name.

The Woodfisch is in production mode. What the heck you say? Production? I thought the Woodfisch was all about handmade one of a kind pieces. Hey – chill. Only for one particular product…..Tampers
Accessory bags to be included for Woodfisch’s premium pipes. One item in each bag is a tamper. Wood species to match the pipe.
The tampers are identical in shape. Hence the production mode.
Got a bunch of photos making the tampers, from the slab of wood to the finished piece.
While writing this post and describing the steps, I realized that’s a lot of steps. Here they are, sans photos:

1) Scour the Woodfisch’s stock of pipe wood. Spalted maple, African mahogany, walnut, cherry, paduak, wenge, rhododendron, canary wood, and bocote.
2) Make several prototypes
3) Table saw
4) Router table
5) Miter box
6) Then on to the drill press for one tiny 1” long hole.
7) Disk sander
8) Flap sander
9) Copper tips
10) Oil finish
11) Done

All products are handmade by the Woodfisch in his Lynchburg shop.

The Jab Fisch can be the most physically painful of all the Woodfisch’s pipes. Gripped tightly in the hand it can jab you. Not that it wishes to. It comes in peace.

This pipe shape is the newest to the Woodfisch’s extensive line of original handmade pipes.

All products are handmade by the Woodfisch in his Lynchburg shop.

Early this year the Woodfisch got serious about pipe making. Shape types started to evolve. Some sprang spontaneously out of the wood. Others resulted from deliberate design sessions.

Shape similarities arose. And begged to have a name. All of the Woodfisch’s pipes are original creations. Thusly, they deserved original names. Because they all belong to the Woodfisch family, they share a common last name - Fisch.

Here are the pipe shapes you will see at our Sept. 19th event:

RolFisch
The Roll Fisch’s bowl is rounded front to rear but flat across the bottom. Looks like it could roll.
Only RolFisch photos are included in this post. Others shall be in future posts.

BowlFisch
The Bowl Fisch is basically shaped like a bowl – rounded on all sides.

GarFisch
The Garden Fisch’s name was inspired by a customer who wanted a pipe to use when gardening. Hardy and strong. If it ended up underfoot and stomped on it needed to get on up and keep smoking.

FinFisch
The Fin Fisch began as a small fin close to the mouthpiece. Added an interesting detail. Also served to elevate the mouthpiece above wherever the pipe was placed.

WhatFisch
The What Fisch has many members. It’s basically, “what is this shape?”. A collection of oddballs.

BanFisch
Banana Fisch is shaped like a what?

GraceFisch
The Grace Fisch is simply graceful. Grace is also Karen’s (Woodfisch’s wife) middle name.

SlopeFisch
The Slope Fisch is all slopes. Angular and without curves.

JabFisch
The Jab Fisch is the most physically lethal of all the Woodfisch’s pipes. Gripped tightly in the hand it will jab you.

RhoFisch
Rhododendron Fisch made of very old rhododendron wood.

The goal is to have a Woodfisch piece in all your homes. You have seen them. Many have held them in your hands. How many know their price? I expect very few.

The photos show the price sheets I made for the April FOTM event. Some were sold, and are “X’d” out.

Pipes made after the event are not shown. Many of them are in my July 10th post. When these newer pipes are cured and polished, I will post photos and prices.

PM me for details and purchasing options.

This is the Woodfisch’s first post since our April FOTM event. Been too busy in the shop to think about other things. Urgency hit yesterday afternoon while doing a project.

Displaying the Woodfisch’s handmade pieces is the topic. How to present artfully crafted pieces. I mean, how should we do it effectively? Assuming that the goal is to increase sales.

Thinking multi dimensionally is a start. More than displaying pieces flat on a table.

The tiered display shelves are in the video. Close to completion. Put together, dry fitted, to make sure everything fits. After liking what I saw I could not resist adding the pipes.

Lot of color in these new pipes.

More color to come for the shelves. The shelf boards are curly maple. When dyed, the curl should pop and be beautiful.

The two base parts are African Mahogany. They also shall receive dye. Colors not yet determined.

The pipes on the bottom shelf are done – buffed and cured. The other pipes still need multiple coats of oil. After the oil dries is when the final buffing is done.

All products are handmade by the Woodfisch in his Lynchburg shop.

FOTM Aftermath

And a wonderful time was had by all!

Queen Deidre accepted her prize as winner of the mystery wood identification challenge. She had her pick of any of The Woodfisch’s pipes. She chose one made from the mystery wood – cannabis.

Event prep

The Woodfisch is a prepared kind of guy. Works out bugs beforehand. Plans and prepares.

Naturally, for our April 18th FOTM event, the Woodfisch immersed himself in getting ready. Set up a mockup of the booth space in his dining room. Good thing that both The Woodfisch and Mrs. Woodfisch eat in the living room. Cause there’s not much eating space left in the dining room.
