He goes by either “Kim” or “WoodFisch” - your choice. WoodFisch” or even “The WoodFisch"

Friends have asked WoodFisch if he is retired since he could be of retirement age. His reply is, “No, I am NOT retired.” He is prone to be a little short with words. He believes that retirement connotes an abundance of free time. There is no free time for the WoodFisch. And why should there be free time when within lies a BURNING DESIRE to create objects made out of wood? The WoodFisch name is fairly recent. Known previously only as Kim, he led a professional life in the varied fields of construction management. During that time woodworking was always in the background. Now, no longer in the background, it prowls the earth for more wood to devour. With saws. The WoodFisch has built a most excellent working space and is ready to create for you.

Experimenting with a new shape to the plateau area surrounding the bowl. Convex as opposed to concave as in most other pipes. Seven pipes in work. I like the new shape.

Walnut, cherry, wenge, and African Mahogany.

Also new is the first time using Wenge. From Africa. It is dense, heavy, almost black, with subtle chocolate brown streaks. Only one coat of oil on it so far – many more to come. The dark color means that dyes have no effect. Colorful rustication is not in its future. I have a very limited supply of Wenge – enough for five more pipes.

The last photo – alas, this walnut pipe is in the Woodfisch hospital. When sanding the concave underside, the sander broke through into the air chamber. A walnut plug was glued into the hole, and epoxy fills in any gaps. The mess will be sanded away and the area dyed black to blend in the plug.

You’ve wondered, what exactly is the process The Woodfisch goes through to achieve the craggy textures and depths of color in his beautiful pipes?

Here are explanations for each step shown in the photos……

1. The Foredom flexible shaft carver uses these three burrs to texture (rusticate) the wood.
2. Using the mid-size burr, bowl shapes are carved into the wood.
3. Light blue and navy blue dye is spread over the rusticated areas. Then the large burr carves larger bowl shapes in a random pattern.
4. Turquoise is dabbed into the large bowls and onto the smooth areas.
5. Using the small burr, random scratches and pits are carved. Then red dye is dabbed carefully onto those new spots and onto the bowl depression.
6. First coat of Tried & True Danish Oil is applied. The wood darkens and the colors lose some vibrancy. Two more coats and then three coats of Tried & True Varnish Oil follow.

There are times when a good idea turns out to be a bad idea. Fortunately, in woodworking, unlike real life, bad ideas may be cut out and sanded away.

My last FB post showed a photo of four pipes in work. The two on the right – bad ideas. The plateau area around the bowl – just not working out.

The bad ideas were excised and replaced with something better.

Onward and upward.

What a wonderful Saturday experience at Fire On The Mountain!

The patrons visiting our booth – all of them appreciative of the Woodfisch’s pieces. And all the patrons were friendly and engaging.

The day was good, saleswise. Thanks to all of you!

After the event The Woodfisch spent time attempting to understand which pieces customers value and appreciate, hoping to identify a pattern that would guide his future work. It was determined that indeed, a pattern does exist – it is that you appreciate all of The Woodfisch’s pieces.
