The Origin of Egress

Our escape room journey really began 30 some years ago on Halloween. Halloween has always been my mom’s favorite holiday. She started small, just decorating the house and dressing up the whole family. Then it expanded to a pumpkin carving party for extended family. Finally, she went all in and started throwing in puzzles and games that fit the theme, elaborate decorations and handmade costumes for the family. Each year, the day after Halloween a new theme is selected, and as the year passes, costumes are hand-sewn, puzzles are created, props designed and a collection of bins and boxes grow in the basement. Invitations are sent out and the hall booked. In about 2 hours the immediate family has to take those boxes of decorations and convert them into another world for the few hours of the party. Everyone comes in costume and for a time, we get to experience another time or place.

Then we heard about escape rooms...and were intrigued. It sounded like something we would be interested in. We weren’t too thrilled about the locked in a room with a zombie type rooms, but you put puzzles and games that must be solved in a room and we are there. We went to a Sherlock Holmes room in Ocean City on vacation one year and were hooked. It was so much like what we designed for Halloween that we knew we had to try it, and Egress was born. We still sit down as a family and brainstorm ideas for each room, and come up with puzzles and clues and special effects that we think would fit perfectly in each one. We want you to enter our rooms and feel like you were transported there. Yes, the puzzles are fun and challenging, but getting to spend some quality time bonding with friends and family helps create an experience that you will remember much longer than how fast you came up with a solution to a clue.
