🎪 The Booth Shot Saga
One of the not-so-glamorous but important parts of the art fair world is the booth shot. If you’ve ever wondered how artists get into art fairs, this little photo is a huge piece of the puzzle. Jurors don’t just look at the art, they look at how it’s displayed too.
We realized last fall that it was time. We haven’t done a new booth shot since 2021, and our display has changed a lot. Plus, we want to start applying to some more difficult shows, and a strong booth shot matters.
So the planning began. What art? What sizes? What arrangement? What tells the story of who we are now? Then… life got busy. Time disappeared. Winter arrived. ❄️
This spring we knew it had to happen.
That meant actually making art specifically for the booth shot, which also meant those pieces couldn’t go to a gallery or an art fair. (Not always easy when you need art for those things too!)
Then came the waiting game… for weather. If you live around here, you know this spring has been basically one long wind event 🌬️. But this past Sunday? Finally. Minimal wind, no storms, and bonus… we were actually home!
A couple trips to the studio to grab art. Then another trip because, of course, something got forgotten. 😆 Tent up. Walls up. Art hung.
Then we waited.
And waited.
For a cloud. ☁️
Because the perfect booth shot really wants soft, diffused lighting and full sun creates harsh shadows. Four hours later… still no clouds. But finally, the sun dropped just enough in the sky and we were able to CLICK.
After all that planning and waiting, the thing we needed happened in one second. Though I did make Randy take a few extra shots just in case. I mean, after all that, it felt like we should at least spend a full minute on it. 😂
Then everything came back down, art got packed up, and we officially have a new booth shot for at least the next couple of years anyway.
Just one of those behind-the-scenes parts of being an artist that most people never see.
Now… fingers crossed the jurors like the new booth shot too. 🤞
Oh hey- we will be in Milwaukee this weekend for Morning Glory Art Fair! Booth number 70, come say hi. 😁
Pic is of Randy (and Bella helping him) getting the tripod set up and camera as we waited for a never to be seen cloud.
