“Concentricity” made its debut at the 2026 Lubbock Arts Festival! Created by Lubbock artist Jonathan Whitfill, the installation features two 13-foot-tall steel sculptures inspired by his childhood memories of polishing rings and watching gemstones catch the light in his grandparents’ jewelry store.

Adding to the gemstone connection, the Lubbock Gem and Mineral Society demonstrated lapidary art—cutting and polishing stones—throughout the Festival weekend.

This program made possible in part through a grant from the City of Lubbock, as recommended by Civic Lubbock, Inc. This project is supported in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.

Looking for something creative to do this Labor Day—or another day? Explore the Lubbock Arts Alliance’s Public Display of Art (PDA) in Lubbock collection!

Begin with “Concentricity” by Lubbock artist Jonathan Whitfill. Unveiled at the 2026 Lubbock Arts Festival, the installation consists of two 13-foot-tall steel sculptures, each weighing approximately 700 pounds.

The series was inspired by Whitfill’s childhood experiences helping in his grandparents’ jewelry store. His memories of polishing rings and watching gemstones catch the light are reflected in the sculptures’ steel rings and jewel-like forms.
