John Sprott is a legendary local artist who has opened for Culture Club, Billy Idol, and Jimmy Paige after winning the semifinals of the MTV Basement tapes as a part of the “punkabilly” band The Nelsons in the 1980s. He has gone on to become a prolific member of the Blues scene in West Texas, as a recording artist and band member. The John Sprott Blues Band consists of John Sprott (guitar and vocals), JT Paz (drums), Sean Frankhouser (bass), and Ron Riley (harmonica). They are known for playing Chicago-style blues with a West Texas twist.

Clayton Stephenson started taking piano lessons at age seven and was accepted into the Juilliard Music Advancement Program at age eight. With the support of Juilliard and other community music programs in New York City, he blossomed into an outstanding pianist and artist. He graduated from the Harvard-New England Conservatory dual-degree program in 2023 with a BA in Economics and a Master's in Piano Performance. In 2022, he became the first African-American finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He is a decorated pianist who has performed with prestigious symphonies, festivals, and concert halls across the United States and Europe

ALL ABOUT MASTERWORKS 5: Top students of the Lubbock Youth Orchestras will perform alongside the LSO in a “Side-by-side” performance during the second half of the concert. Tickets on sale now - purchase at the link in the comments or by calling 806-762-1688!

Get ready for a night of epic, cinematic grandeur! Wagner originally wrote Ride of the Valkyries as a part of his vocal “music drama,” with a large buildup to the mythical Valkyrie warriors gathering to honor their dead with battle cries. Rossini’s overture to The Barber of Seville sets the stage for one of the most beloved comic operas of all time. Half-time by Martinau was written in honor of an exciting game between the Czech and French soccer teams. Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, a pivotal moment in the history of the Protestant Reformation and the Holy Roman Empire. Korngold’s The Sea Hawk Suite is a piece from the “golden-age” of Hollywood, a lush and swashbuckling soundtrack for iconic actor Errol Flynn.

MEET THE FEATURED MUSICIANS:

Kim Hudson is the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra Principal Flutist and the Crew of Columbia, STS-107 Endowed Chair. She has dedicated her time as a flute teacher to students of all ages (including at the collegiate level) and as an outstanding performer with the LSO and other performing arts organizations in the region for over 20 years. She holds an M.M. in Flute Performance from Texas Tech University and B.M. in Flute Performance from the University of Houston.

Dr. Rachel Mazzucco is Lecturer of Harp and Music Theory at Texas Tech University and Co-Director of the TTU String Project. She serves as the LSO’s Principal Harpist and as the Rachel Jean Armstrong Thomas Endowed Chair. She is also an active performer with Ballet Lubbock and the Amarillo Symphony (where she also serves as Principal Harpist). She holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts with a concentration in Music Theory and an M.M. in Harp Performance from TTU, and a B.M. in Music Performance and a B.S. in Mathematics from Texas Christian University. She has studied under many renowned harpists, including Susan Pejovich of the Dallas Symphony and the late LSO Principal Harpist Gail Barber. In addition to her work as a performer and educator, Dr. Mazzucco has also presented research in local, regional, and international venues, for groups such as the American Harp Society, the American String Teacher’s Association, and the Texas Society for Music Theory.

MEET THE FEATURED MUSICIAN:

Amanda Key is known for her "wonderful light lyric voice with a smashing top." The American Soprano graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance, and earned a master’s degree at the Conservatory in Amsterdam. She was blessed to sing opera and church music in 11 different countries while living and working in Europe for 12 years. While in Europe, she participated in many international masterclasses, attended the European Music Academy in Prague, was a finalist in the 2016 Beethoven Award, and co-founded/directed the Dutch opera company B.O.O.M! (Bold Opera on the Move). She continues to perform opera and church music since moving back to the states, most recently with the Brazos Symphony Orchestra and Lubbock Symphony Orchestra.

MEET THE MUSIC!

Donizetti’s opera Don Pasquale is a comedy of errors rooted in the exaggerated archetypes of Italian Commedia dell'arte stock characters. The story follows the elderly Don Pasquale, who is fooled into giving his inheritance to his nephew Ernesto, despite Pasquale’s opposition to Ernesto’s engagement to Norina, a commoner. With the help of Pasquale’s doctor Malatesta, Norina becomes “Sofronia” and tricks Pasquale into a comically miserable marriage that he finds a way out of, all according to plan. In the end, “Sofronia” leaves and the inheritance goes to Ernesto and Norina. Don Pasquale accepts their marriage, amused by the truth of their ruse.
