Exhibition Title:
BOOM AND DUST
Jason Reed and Barry Stone

Artist Statement:
BOOM AND DUST is a 58-foot accordion-fold photobook depicting a 40-mile stretch of highway between Midland and Odessa. Inspired by Ed Ruscha, Reed and Stone made hundreds of photographs from the back of a pickup truck of this roadway, which serves as the backbone of the oil industry known as the “Petroplex.” The exhibition features large-scale photographs, video, a radio transmitted soundscape, and the unfurling of the full length of the book. Together, these works form a dense scroll of mancamps, pumpjacks, and oil outfitters, conjuring the unrelenting industrial landscape situated in the Permian Basin, the most productive oil field in the world.

The visual works are accompanied by a soundscape of acoustic guitar improvisations made in the former company town of Texon in the shadow of the Santa Rita no.1 and layered with field recordings of gas flares, produced water lakes, and lap steel, which accompany the video and can be accessed via the CO-OPt hyper-local radio station, FM 89.9.

A limited number of books and soundtrack cassettes have been set aside for this exhibition and will be available during the closing reception and performance.

Join us on Thursday, April 2, for the opening of an exhibition of works by Provo-based artist Fidalis Buehler.

“My work represents identity seen through the complexity of American culture and South Pacific traditions. Image-making is an act of playful conjuring – reassembling personal histories and inventing mythologies laden with fear, anxiety, dreams, revelations, magic, and mysticism.”

Along The Fence continues that dialogue, rummaging through the intersection of familial summertime experiences and the metaphysical.
