You never know what youโ€™re going to see on the streets of Lowellโ€ฆ but every third Saturday in September we crank that up a notch and make it even more wacky as racers from all over the country embark onto the city to take on 7 miles of Chaotic Kinetic Goodness. Itโ€™s kinda like Mulberry St in a way I guess you could say!

The Merrimack River Plunge is an obstacle to not take lightly. Hosted at the LHSP Pavilion which is home to our family fun zone, food trucks, entertainment and more - this is the halfway point of the race where you fuel up and get ready to make a big splash as you head into the second half and onto the finish! Floating down river seems easy right?! Itโ€™s up to you if you sink or swim!

This week we wanted to take a look back at some of our race art of years past (official, unused, sketches, etc.) because although this is our 9th official race LKSR has been around for 10 years and with this being our biggest and best one yet (until next year) we wanted to celebrate the race and its history.

2025 was the first year we introduced community partners and the concept of their missions influencing the theme of that years race. It was something new but we showed it was possible and our racers/fans showed it was possible through the addition of beautiful floral elements to themselves, their sculptures and more! We knew there was no better option to represent the beautiful cross roads of STEAM, nature, community and more than through the beautiful watercolor and illustration work of decorated professor/designer/artist Regina Milan. Mechanical bugs and hummingbirds took over our race course and pollinated good vibes everywhere they could

As the years go by, we hear more and more the word โ€œiconicโ€ being thrown around when the race is talked about. This is iconic, that is iconic, something about a flying fish being iconic?! Iconic Lowell-based artist Frank Casazza of Eyeformation brought a whole new look to the race. Still holding the kinetic spirit this year introduced some amazing mascots that qu**ky became fan favorites!

The race on multiple occasions has been described as enigmatic and we thought there was no better way to represent that energy than commissioning the immensely talented yet enigmatic creative illustration skills of Ellen Wetmore, UML Art Department extraordinaire. Weโ€™re still waiting for someone to make this into a sculpture to raceโ€ฆ

2020 really killed the vibe. COVID shut the world down and for the 2020 and 2021 season we sadly had to postpone the race. 2022 we were ready to be back with a bang focusing on community and the City of Lowell as our home - in comes design hotshot and LKSRs own Lisa Corkum to deliver and welcome you all back in the warmest way we canโ€ฆ.with Kinetic Madness!

2020 was going to be a great year of clear vision and a ringing in of the next decade of optimism, creativity, life and so much moreโ€ฆ little did we know. But we were ready! Although no one has ever see it we thought this series would be perfect to finally show our unused 2020 poster! This hand done concept by designer/illustrator Maddie Grover highlighted multiple amazing parts of the race - can you spot them?
