Traveling with Thompsons - Train Edition!

Ted and Mabel loved trains. Whether it was for travel or for exhibition, Ted and Mabel clearly loved catching a train whenever they were able! With the news that Union Pacific Steamer “Big Boy” No. 4014 is starting its Heartland of America Tour, we wanted to celebrate with a few images of the many trains the Thompson's photographed over time. And when Big Boy rolls through Colorado in October, we hope you get a chance to see this impressive steamer and capture an image in memory of the Thompson’s love of trains!

To celebrate this year's Corn Roast Festival, we dug through the archives to find the story of the first Corn Roast. According to the Reporter Herald, 129 years ago the citizens of Loveland worked together to host the first Corn Roast festival. In hopes of advertising their Street Fair, Loveland worked with F.W. Angier of the Union Pacific Railroad to make a stop on the day excursion of Northern Colorado agricultural communities.

Given 10 days' notice, Lovelanders worked together to provide corn and a bologna sandwich to 800 excursionists on the train. 3,000 ears of corn and 1,500 sandwiches were served with coffee, lemonade and milk. A trench 50 feet in length was dug to roast the corn. As the Denver News advertised “ ..a great corn roast is a new thing for the Rocky Mountain region, and no one should miss it, giving, at the same time, due honor to the citizens of Loveland for inauguration so hospitable an enterprise”

We hope you share some of your favorite images from this year's festival to see how the celebration continues!

Explore our Main Gallery exhibit featuring 66 black-and-white silver gelatin prints that are drawn from the extensive, largely unpublished archive of this Chicano photographer’s work in Los Angeles, New York, and Hungary. Luis Garza’s images document his East Los Angeles community during the early 1970s, his South Bronx neighborhood during the 1960s, and his 1971 travels to Budapest,
Hungary, for the World Peace Conference where he met Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros. www.thelovelandmuseum.org/the-other-side-of-memory

This is the last few weeks for our Stages of Life, a portrait exhibit, before it closes on August 18th! Make sure you stop by the gallery and see if before it is gone!

Portraiture is an old art form going back as far as ancient Egypt, where it flourished from around 5,000 years ago. Before the invention of photography, a painted, sculpted, or drawn portrait was the only way to record a person’s appearance. Portraits depict the essence of a person or group.

This exhibition features historic portraits from the Museum’s collection exploring the different stages of human life.
