We are one week away from the opening of next Main Gallery exhibit. This exhibition features photographs by Ansel Adams of the Japanese American relocation camp in Manzanar, California, during World War II.

These photographs are the subject of his controversial book Born Free and Equal, which protested the treatment of these American citizens. Adams’s Manzanar work is a departure from his signature style of landscape photography.

Robert Flynn Johnson, Curator Emeritus, Fine Art Museums of San Francisco, writes in the exhibition essay, “This is not an art exhibition, a history lesson, or a study in race relations; it is all three. The hope is that it educates us about an unfortunate moment in the country’s history that must be better understood. It also should serve as a warning as to what can occur when emotion and fear overwhelm clarity and courage.”

Exhibition organized by Photographic Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA.

Happy ! We all know and love Lego but did you know that Loveland plays an important role in the history of Lego? Lego was first created in Denmark in 1932 and quickly became popular worldwide. By the 1960s two brothers who owned a Denver toy company “Samsonite” caught word of the popular toy and wanted to start producing them in the United States. In April of 1965, the Samsonite company opened a Lego making factory in Loveland. They created sets much larger than the original ones as well as Lego Futura which was exclusive to the USA. The factory has since shut down, but you can still go to the Bricks and Mini figs store right here in Loveland Colorado to see some of the original Lego products. This April, on the 58th anniversary of the Loveland Lego Factory opening, we can give thanks to the Shwayder brothers for bringing this iconic toy to the United States.

The Loveland Museum Collections is always seeking to expand their collections on local history. If you have any historic Lego photos or memorabilia that were created in the Loveland Plant and would like to donate please reach out to the museum here: https://www.thelovelandmuseum.org/collection-donations/
