Redoing a FAQ for you all! "Why Shaking Bird Art?" In this short, I explain the story behind the name and why I chose it for my business. Was this close to your guess??? Comment below if you've got an interesting nickname and tell me all about it!

A fantasy watercolor painting of a girl from when I was 20, and one from when I was 30! One question my students often ask me is “Miss Shelby, how’d you get so good?” The short answer is practice. It’s easy to see someone working at a more advanced level and assume that they’ve always been that way. (I do it too, all the time!) But in fact, no one who has ever been good at anything ever got to that point without significant patience and consistency. Just never give up! Improvement may happen so slowly that it’s difficult to see, but in the end it’s always there if you keep practicing.

I hope this will be encouraging for someone. I always appreciate seeing other artists’ progress shots, myself! And now I look forward to seeing where my own craft may potentially be in another 10 years. Something to be excited for. ☺️

Work in progress! In between finishing up my last commission for the season and creating demo art pieces for Loveland Museum, I’ve been working on this raven—in secret up until yesterday. It’s meant as a birthday gift for my mother, who shares my love of corvids, but I ended up having to tell her about it yesterday. Hopefully it will come together faster now that I don’t have to hide it!

Although you may have discovered by now that I love drawing dragons (and if you haven't caught on yet, where ya been?! 😅) but did you know that I'm teaching a kids' summer camp this year EXCLUSIVELY ABOUT HOW TO DRAW DRAGONS?! Camp will run in the second week of June, at the . See link below or in my stories for more information and to sign up! HURRY though, there are limited slots available and filling up quickly!

Camp will cover all sorts of topics such as shading and lighting, anatomy and basic drawing techniques with a focus on studying nature to create realistic dragons. This will include sketching claws, horns, scales, bones, wings and more! For anyone in the NoCo area of Colorado, I'd be delighted to see your children there. 😊

New drawing in progress! Might need to do another naming contest for this little dragon. It was simply a sketch that is turning into something more. What do you think so far?

Something a little different today! Finished this copy of Alphonse Mucha’s lithograph, “Spring.” Mucha has long been one of my top favorite artists, and the Art Nouveau movement is often an inspiration for my fantasy portrait compositions. A student and I copied this particular piece alongside each other for a long time, and it’s exciting to finally call it finished!

“Copy of Spring, by Mucha,” watercolor on cold pressed watercolor paper. Not for sale.

Finished another graphite fantasy drawing! I present to you, “The Lone Wolf.” For those who fight in silence, and who bear their burdens alone.

Thank you to for letting me use your photo as a reference!

Just gotta say it! 😁 If you're in the northern Colorado area on April 19, then stop by the vendor market at Crooked Beech Brewing Company ! Not only will I be there (with NEW prints and merch, and deals!) but so will a mobile book shop, Marchio's Grill food truck, and tons of other artists, artisans and makers from the area. The brewery has both alcoholic and nonalcoholic brews (their lemonade is amazing) and a playground for kids. It would be a blast to see you there! 😁🙌🏻

I love watercolor. Love the way it smells, the way it flows, its atmospheric transparency. It’s also quick and easy to set up and clean up. It’s definitely challenging, but I enjoy a good challenge!

There are definitely elements to watercolor which make it difficult to control, but I like to think that helps me with spontaneity and motion. It helps to silence the inner critic that calls for perfection, and like water, encourages me to go with the flow instead.

The only problem I’m currently facing, as I begin creating larger and larger fantasy portraits, is the logistics of space when painting on large surfaces because watercolors have to remain flat while worked on. Maybe I can begin painting on the floor? I want to keep making them bigger! More folklore, more fantasy, more fairycore!
