Now I been around Bullitt County longer than most folks care to admit. I remember clear as day when them officers first rolled up on Camp Cedar Lakes—place was quiet as a Sunday graveyard, fire still cracklin’ like it didn’t know nobody was gone, and the air… well, it had that sour-sweet smell that sure weren’t just wood burnin’.
Doors stood wide open, like whoever left didn’t bother lookin’ back. No signs of a fight. No bags packed. Plates still sittin’ out with food gone cold, and I swear there was a fork bent near in half like somebody twisted it with their bare hands.
Didn’t feel right. Felt rushed. Like somethin’ come through there sudden-like and sent folks scatterin’, left behind this low hum nobody could quite put their finger on.
To this day, ain’t a soul can tell you where they went.
Some folks say the woods know. Most of us just mind our business—especially when them trees start creakin’ and there ain’t a lick of wind blowin’.
