They danced on weeknights. In regular clothes. With whoever was standing nearby. Nobody filmed it, nobody rated it, and by every available account they had a significantly better time than we are currently having.

Jitterbug is what they were doing. Bouncy, quick, cheerfully unserious, and still the fastest swing to get moving on because the basic is short and repeats immediately. There is no long runway. You learn the rhythm, you add a turn, and about halfway through class it starts feeling less like counting and more like playing.

It also fits an enormous amount of music. Rock and roll, blues, and a good share of what turns up at any wedding reception.

Wednesday October 21, 7:00 PM, Bravo Dance Studio in Louisville. Fifty minutes, $12, beginners. Come alone, partners change constantly.

Unpopular opinion: pizza is a better birthday food than cake.

It feeds more people. Nobody fights about the frosting. And it pairs noticeably better with an evening of dancing, which is exactly what we've got planned for October birthdays.

The Birthday Pizza Party is Friday, October 23 at Bravo Dance Studio in Louisville. Waltz, Foxtrot, East Coast Swing, and Salsa from 8:00 to 9:30, and the pizza is included in your $12. Birthday in October? Come celebrate. Birthday any other month? Come celebrate them anyway, that's how this works.

Pizza, yes. Lessons, no. It's a party, so bring a few steps you already know. Solo is completely fine, you'll never be without a partner for long.

Your playlist is full of dances you cannot do yet.

Not the fast ones. The other ones. The ballad the band plays around ten o'clock at every wedding. The song from the movie. The one somebody always puts on in the kitchen. Most of that is Rumba music, and almost nobody knows it.

So the floor fills with couples doing the universal move, side to side in a small circle, waiting politely for the song to end.

Rumba is the fix. One compact pattern, forgiving timing, and by week two enough turns to get through a whole song without repeating yourself.

Two Tuesdays in Louisville, October 27 and November 3, 7:00 PM at Bravo Dance Studio. Bring someone or do not, we rotate partners either way.

TWO LEFT FEET, ONE WEDDING

Every couple has a version of this conversation. One of you says "we should do something for the first dance." The other one says "I have two left feet." And then nobody brings it up again until the week before.

We'd like to interrupt that cycle.

The first dance is two minutes. Two. That is a very fixable amount of time, and we fix it the same way every time: your song, your comfort level, steps built for the two of you rather than borrowed from a video. Waltz, Rumba, Foxtrot, something contemporary, whatever the music wants. We handle the music editing when it needs it, and the parent dances too if those are on the list.

At Bravo Dance Studio and Louisville Wedding Dance, we work with every kind of couple. Bride and groom, bride and bride, groom and groom. Two left feet each, if that's what you're bringing.

Start a few months out. By the wedding, it's the two minutes you're actually looking forward to.

FORTY-FIVE MINUTES, ALL YOURS

Private lessons, 7 days a week

Here's what happens in a private lesson that never happens anywhere else: nobody else is in the room.

No waiting for your turn. No rotation. No pretending you got the step when you didn't. For forty-five minutes, the teacher's entire attention is on one thing, which is you, and the lesson goes exactly as fast or as slow as you need it to.

That's why people learn faster this way. Not because private lessons are magic, but because every minute is spent on your feet, your questions, your goal. Maybe that goal is Salsa. Maybe it's Waltz for a wedding. Maybe it's "be able to dance at a party without panicking." All of those are normal, and all of those work.

At Bravo Dance Studio in Louisville we teach more than 27 dances, to singles and couples, seven days a week by appointment. You don't need a partner and you don't need to know anything yet.

$90 for 45 minutes. New students get the second lesson free.
