Louisville Visual Art’s 13th annual art[squared] exhibition is THIS WEEK, with the online auction open now and the ticketed reception is Thursday! You can also visit LVA during any of their open hours to see the exhibition for yourself at no cost. We got the chance to pregame with LVA’s Keith Waits and Steve Heine, who got us all squared away on this amazing community gathering and fundraiser. Now take your pick of a piece, there are so many great ones to choose from!

New Review: THE READYMADE AT THE END OF THE WORLD

"After Precarity extends and pushes the conversation on art made from or inspired by commercially manufactured goods, or art in the age of the Anthropocene, from the present moment into the future, while drawing on the past."

Read Sarah Melloy's review of Kathryn Brooks' Critical & Curatorial Studies thesis show "After Precarity" at 21c Museum Hotel Louisville:

After Precarity extends and pushes the conversation on art made from or inspired by commercially manufactured goods, or art in the age of the anthropocene, from the present moment into the future, while drawing on the past.

New Curatorial Reflection: THE BODY ISN’T A BATTERY THAT DISCHARGES UPON DEATH

"I remain aesthetically attracted to work that would translate well on a Xerox machine, but I’m more interested in spending time with images, objects, and sounds that reveal themselves slowly. Art that sustains my attention often has a drone about it and seems comfortable steeping in grief."

Read Sean J Patrick Carney's curatorial reflection on his spring 2026 exhibition, "The body isn’t a battery that discharges upon death." at The Carnegie:

I have become more attentive to the pace at which artworks unfold. I remain aesthetically attracted to work that would translate well on a Xerox machine, but I’m more interested in spending time with images, objects, and sounds that reveal themselves slowly. Art that sustains my attention often ha...

New Vignette: ALTERING THE STATE

"I would trouble the idea that artists need institutions. I think it’s the other way around.” “I think institutions need artists. They don’t have anything without us,” she said to a rousing cheer from the audience.

Read Maria Seda-Reeder's thoughts on "Altered States: (A) Critical Response", a symposium hosted by Great Meadows Foundation and The Carnegie:

“I would trouble the idea that artists need institutions. I think it’s the other way around. I think institutions need artists. They don’t have anything without us,” she said to a rousing cheer from the audience.

New Curatorial Reflection: DRIFTING ON A MEMORY

"The Black aesthetic is bought, sold, traded, and disregarded like a commodity. It feels like everyone else is profiting from our culture except us. “Drifting on a Memory” is a celebration of our collective expression despite attempts to silence, isolate, destroy, and re-tell our stories."

Read Shauntrice Black's curatorial reflection on her most recent show, "Drifting on a Memory," at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage's Elmer Lucille Allen Gallery:

The Black aesthetic is bought, sold, traded, and disregarded like a commodity. It feels like everyone else is profiting from our culture except us. “Drifting on a Memory” is a celebration of our collective expression despite attempts to silence, isolate, destroy, and re-tell our stories.

New Review: A LIMITED TIME: PAINTINGS BY JACOB HEUSTIS

"If we continue to value algorithms, objects, land and benchmarks over people, slowness, labor and bio-diversity ... what role remains for the wild-hearted artist in a world that may no longer have any use for them?"

Read the full review by Elle Hendrickson of Jacob Heustis' recent exhibition of paintings:

What role remains for the wild-hearted artist in a world that may no longer have any use for them?

Originally constructed in 2023 by Lindsey Cummins and Lucas Keown, this hanging library has since grown to over 500 zines strong and includes new pickups from its stops in Scotland and Mexico City. WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING
On the Speed Art Museum and Institutional Disappointment

"But to truly rely on museums to build systems that benefit us would be much like asking questions posed in this tweet: Is Mastercard a q***r ally? Is [insert corporation] my friend? Is the Speed Art Museum a feminist?"

Read this special editorial by Kudzu Jelly's Ellie Bruner for a breakdown of the Speed's recent dissolution of its Learning, Engagement & Belonging (LEB) department and the consequences it incurs:

But to truly rely on [museums] to build systems that benefit us would be much like asking questions posed in this tweet: Is Mastercard a q***r ally? Is [insert corporation] my friend? Is the Speed Art Museum a feminist?
