As my art career grows and I explore new ideas in my paintings, I’ve been thinking about how others have inspired or empowered me. I can still vividly remember the day, where we were, and how taking to me like a serious human, like she would have spoken to an adult, gave me courage in my own convictions.
I am taking her as my inspiration for today.

My wonderful husband spent the week reviving the easel I received as a college graduation gift from my parents. Like me, it has a few replacement parts and was in need of care.

We have never had the space to set it up and consequently, it has been stored wherever we have had space. For a while, it sat outdoors, which dried out the wood and rusted the mechanism used to raise and lower the center post. About 5 years ago, he decided to take it apart and we’ve stored the pieces in the garage so that it would not get any worse.

It took a good amount of work to get it functioning, but we’re happy with the results. He cut away the damaged wood on the base and cut a block of poplar to fit. He then went about cleaning each piece of wood with wood soap and then gluing all of the wooden pieces back together. After removing all of the rust from the lifting mechanism, he was finally able to assemble the center post with the frame and attached the frame to the base.

In order to get it to fit in my studio, he cut 8" off the center, still able to hold a 60" canvas. (Maybe one day I’ll paint that large again!) The last step was to oil the wood to bring back some of the finish. It will take a couple of coats to make it look uniform, but it feels great to have it back in use.
