I made ROOT because I have something to contribute that needs to be said: we don’t survive without help.
The play in its current form is bold and ambitious with a bit too many ideas. When we put it on again, it will be stripped back to make this message clear. Until then, the play we are performing has the core ideas, only a bit cluttered. I’ve not achieved this simplicity yet. But it’s worth putting out into the world. People love it. They probably love it because it’s not perfect. Because it is a little messy. Because we shot for the stars. Because we’re bringing a new form to theater by incorporating Mixed Reality. Because it looks cool. And because our actors are brilliant.
We’ve got two shows left (this Saturday and Sunday). You really shouldn’t miss it!

Tomorrow, (6/13) at 1:45pm and Monday (6/15) at 11pm, you’ll experience life after death. Witness Pluto ascend into the digital realm. You’ll hold your phone. Digital beings will walk past you. The room will blur between worlds and you’ll be sitting right in the middle of it.

FRINGERS! ROOT wasn’t perfect at the preview show. I’ve spent so many years trying to figure out how to tell an entertaining story about how to survive when we are destroying the planet and now how we are fighting for our worth when dealing with AI. I came up with a story that shows good in the world comes from relationships. The story asks the question: do we do it alone or together? I came to the idea that we are missing trust, and the only way through is to trust again and go through life together.
The problem with the preview wasn’t the tech or the acting. The tech did have hiccups, we expected that. But the story was not streamlined enough. We need to make adjustments to make that even stronger for you. And so we are making those adjustments.
But let me tell you, even though we weren’t perfect, people are still thinking about it a week later. Larry Niven, sci-fi legend and author of classics such as Ringworld and A Mote in God’s Eye (co-authored with the late Jerry Pournelle), messaged me still thinking about how to improve it, because it’s important enough to improve.

Later today, we premiere ROOT! It’s my first play and I am thrilled to be able to put it on for a sold out crowd of 96 friends, family, friends of friends, and strangers. It’s a dream I never knew I had.
Honestly, this process has been life changing. First, I’ve found my voice in storytelling and I know my brand moving forward. It’s our goal to help people, and stories shape our world, so the stories I tell aim to point toward the good in the world, not the bad. Stories should guide us to a future we want: and the future I want it one of trust and connection.
Theater is all about building a community and it has touched me in a way that my other artistic endeavors have not.
In addition, this play has shown me my roots: all the people past and present who have made this dream possible for me. My Grandma Gorlitz, who gave me money for this project back when it was an end of the world tv series. My high school teacher Mrs. Knack who sparked my love of philosophy and time. My Mom who is being supportive from Michigan. My Dad who is thrilled I’m at this point. My husband who took every crazy idea I had and turned it into this reality. My long time friend and producer Emily who is always ready for any challenge and a great actor, making my life easier by being available for any role. My producer Matt, who has been there for every twist and turn of the story and guided me through. My team who has rolled with all the changes to make this better. Too many others to name. Nothing is done in isolation. All is possible only because of the people in our lives. And now, I carry that pride with me.
I seriously cannot wait to show you this story and can’t believe that I get to do this again and again all month!
