Super pleased to share the first of three original songs we recorded live into one microphone at Loveboat Sound in Los Angeles, California.

Yes! This was recorded into one microphone - an AEA R88mkii - through a pair of 1073s.
The R88 is a stereo ribbon microphone adored my many. I got the idea to try to record a whole band live, without headphones or any close mics from John Cubiberti’s ‘onemic’ series. This means the band had to be rehearsed and ultra dynamic because Rainee had to sing without any amplification and really, really work the mic (all while playing guitar!!!).
We first had to setup and do test recordings and effectively mix the record - panning is physical so the guitar amps are moved and balanced. Drums were scooted around, etc. Once it was mixed, we did the real takes. With all the pressure of no safety net, the band executed and Rainee sang and played her heart out. It almost looks like she’s lip syncing and we recorded her isolated into a LDC or something. I swear I feel like I fooled myself. The result was a single 2-track recording that I later added a touch of reverb, EQ, and compression to. Live is the vibe!
