Opening on October 11, "Uhengaparaoa, Taonga Tuku Iho: Ancestral Gifts and Contemporary Māori Art," celebrates Whakatōhea identity, connection to whenua (land) and whakapapa (genealogy), and the resilience of cultural traditions in the face of colonial suppression.

At the heart of the exhibition is a treasured kaitaka (cloak) from the Fowler Museum collection, regarded as an ancestor by the Whakatōhea community. In response, contemporary Whakatōhea artists create works that honor, reinterpret, and extend the knowledge carried through generations. From finely woven kete and kākahu to contemporary works incorporating recycled materials, feathers, and new forms, these artists demonstrate how mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) remains vital and evolving.

Some monuments are carved in stone. Others are woven by hand.

"Textiles as Monument" invites visitors to consider the stories held in cloth—memories carried through generations, identities stitched into pattern, and histories woven into every thread.

Come see "Textiles as Monument" at the Fowler Museum, where cloth becomes a vessel for memory, history, and identity. On view through June 2027.

The mortar and pestle, like this one currently on view in "Mountain Spirits: Rice and Indigeneity in the Northern Luzon Highlands, Philippines," are essential tools for processing rice by the Ifugao people.

Used to thresh, de-husk, and pound the grains, they transform harvested rice into its edible form. Carved from hardwood, the mortar is paired with a long pestle. The sound of pounding rice is a familiar rhythm, echoing this crop’s central role in both daily life and ritual.

Happy National Dog Day! We love this work from our 2022 exhibition, "‘How Do You See This World?’: The Art of Almighty God."

For nearly thirty years, Almighty God has worked on an extensive series of paintings that constitute a campaign against smoking. The “I Will Stop Smoking” series grew to include humans, animals, and even plants smoking beneath texts that voiced a variation on the titular sentiment.
