ARCANE Space is pleased to present Sincere, a new body of sculptural work by Diana “Didi” Rojas, opening September 19, on view through October 25, 2026
Known for her artistic renditions of popular sneakers and designer footwear, Rojas has explored how one constructs their being through what they wear. With Sincere, she turns her attention to the humble button, embracing repetition as a way to examine, in her words, “the point at which the familiar becomes strange without ceasing to be familiar.”
The works emerge through an intensely repetitive and tactile process. Rojas sculpts and manipulates hundreds of buttons, transforming this everyday object through the accumulation of touch, time, and labor. Each button carries the unique imprint of Rojas’ fingertips, leaving behind a trace of her individual identity. Though made through repetition, no two are quite the same; each possesses a distinct character, bearing the physical record of the hand that made it.
Buttons, seemingly mundane nondescript objects, quietly play an essential role in our everyday lives. They fasten the waistband of our pants, keep our shirts closed throughout the day, and secure our bags. Small and familiar, the button is an object of utility, but also one of connection.
Rojas writes:
There is nothing more sincere than a button.
An ordinary, intimate object known for its unheroic ability to connect.
If a button could talk… it would whisper:
I am here to keep it together. I am necessary. I have been touched. Someone took the time to put me here.
Quiet devotion.
Sincere marks a new approach to Rojas’ sculptural practice. Rather than creating freestanding sculptures that sit on pedestals, she carefully attaches each of her button sculptures onto canvas. The works connect the hand-built quality of their construction with the physical labor of the hand, while returning the button to its most fundamental purpose: to connect.
Through repetition, touch, and labor, Rojas elevates the ordinary button into something quietly intimate—an object whose value lies not in its rarity, but in its usefulness, familiarity, and capacity to hold things together.
