May 8, 1967 — 59 years ago today, Muhammad Ali was indicted for refusing induction into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
“I ain’t got no quarrel with them Viet Cong.”
At the height of his career, Ali risked prison and was stripped of his heavyweight title for standing by his beliefs.
For many Black Americans, Ali became a powerful symbol of resistance during the Vietnam era.
