The "Technical Genius" Who Accidentally Ruined The Beatles' Private Studio
Postscript from the Apple trip to New York from yesterday’s post:
Let’s talk about one of Magic Alex’s greatest non-hits…
While John and Paul were busy selling Apple as a creative utopia, their resident “technical genius” Magic Alex was cooking up inventions that sounded groundbreaking… until you actually tried to use them.
Take, for instance: the 72-track recording studio he promised to build for Apple.
Seventy-two tracks. In 1968. At a time when 8-track was cutting-edge. The Beatles were thrilled—finally, a custom-built studio that would let them create without EMI breathing down their necks.
What did Alex deliver?
A room.
With no proper soundproofing.
No acoustic treatment.
No talkback system.
No patch bay.
And not a single functioning recording track.
Basically, it was a very expensive broom closet with wires.
The 72-track studio disaster was just the tip of the iceberg. Alex’s pitch meetings with the band sounded like a sci-fi convention. He famously promised John that he could replace the brake lights on his car with an "invisible forcefield" that would stop vehicles behind him from crashing. He also secured thousands of pounds from Apple to develop a telephone that answered itself by voice command, wallpaper that doubled as stereo loudspeakers, and an "electronic paint" that could change the color of your living room walls at the flick of a switch. Needless to say, not a single prototype ever materialized.
