Opening next Thursday June 11th. “Object Poetry,”
an active observation and engagement with sculptures that inhabit the lacunae where language lapses. The featured works–spanning performance, kinetics, and assemblage–use sound, light, video, movement and found objects as structural mnemonic devices. Across three “verses,” or participatory environments, the presentation asks, “What possibilities do these forms make actual?” Guided by this central question, adopted from artist, Intermedia theorist, and Fluxus co-founder Dick Higgins, the exhibition engages the viewer as a physical and emotional participant.

From the Archive: “Surfboards” (1986), a group exhibition of fiberglass sculptures by Peter Halley, Peter Schuyff, Kenny Scharf, Dean Edwards, James Welling, and Ashley Bickerton. The “Surfboard” show takes the idea of the object (in this case, the seductive shape of a surfboard) and attempts to trap the image beneath the fiberglass and resin surface. The pristine quality of the finish thereby heightens the effect of the color and design underneath, and shape becomes a hyper-realization of the art object.

Artwork: Peter Halley, “Reverse Teardrop Board,” 1986; James Welling, “Classic Malibu Board,” 1986, Ashley Bickerton, “Pipeline Special,” 1986

We are thrilled to share Lita Albuquerque’s inclusion in “Cosmic Landscapes,” now on view at Mitterrand, alongside works by Yves Klein and Jack Goldstein.

Lita Albuquerque’s works extend this reflection into a cosmological and systemic dimension. By articulating art, science, geography, and memory, her practice highlights the relationships between Earth and the cosmos. Her projects, such as Stellar Axis, express an interdisciplinary vision of the world, fully aligned with Morin’s idea of interconnected knowledge and systems.

Congratulations Lita!

! One of the many historical works to pass through the gallery: an intimate and extremely rare work on paper by Frida Kahlo. Executed in 1938, this work is presented within an elaborately gilded and hand-painted frame by Diego Rivera. Kahlo’s achingly poetic approach to portraiture and her personal iconography establishes her as one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century.

A big congratulation to William Brickel on the opening of “The Finding of a Nature”at Larsen / Warner in Stockholm, the artist’s first exhibition in Scandinavia and first with the gallery. Brickel’s remarkable new paintings continue to expand a singular figurative language—merging art historical references with psychologically charged contemporary narratives.

From the Archive: “SELF-MEDICATED” (2002), a group exhibition exploring intoxication, altered states, addiction, spectacle, and excess through the work of artists including John Baldessari, Bruce Conner, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol, Dennis Hopper, Tom Sachs, Fred Tomaselli, and Damien Hirst.

As subject matter, alcohol and drugs have been part of art history since Greek vase painting, where figures have been depicted drinking wine from calyx craters; or think of Caravaggio’s drunken “Bacchus,” or Picasso’s “Absinthe Drinkers.”

Artworks: Exhibition invitation; Ed Ruscha, “Anti-Depressants,” 1972; John Baldessari, “A Person Who Wants Everything”, 1996; Fred Tomaselli, “Small Arrangement,” 1993; Tom Sachs, “Clock 7 Minutes 2 Seconds,” 2001

Michael Kohn Gallery is pleased to present “Object Poetry,” an active observation and engagement with sculptures that inhabit the lacunae where language lapses. “Object Poetry “opens June 11th and will be on view through September 12, 2026.

Rather than representations, the human and non-human sculptures by artists Ian Burns, Bruce Conner, Tony Oursler, Chiffon Thomas, and Cajsa von Zeipel are reconfigurations of the psychological, physical and meta-physical human experience. Thomas embodies a new modality of existence through a sonic and performative inversion of human and architectural faculties, while von Zeipel situates post-capitalist themes in a futuristic, human-object cyborg, and Burns in a kinetic live-feedback sculpture of everyday objects. Oursler’s audio-visual sculpture projects a media-saturated consciousness onto an electronic entity, and Conner reduces feeling to a conceptual melding of found objects. In between each point of origin from which the artists build, and augment, are constructions united by their intermedial entanglement with sonic vibrations, lo-fi experimentation, digital performance, and ephemeral qualities.

Artwork details: Chiffon Thomas, “Untitled (Dome, Figure I),” 2023;; Tony Oursler, “RGB2,” 1996-97; Ian Burns, “Outpost,” 2008; Cajsa von Zeipel, “Aquarius,” 2019; Bruce Conner, “UNTITLED SCULPTURE,” 1979

This amazing painting by William Brickel, Top and Tale (2025), is currently on view at the gallery as part of Friends of SLOMA.

Up the 101 and along the coast, a range of significant bodies of work have traveled through San Luis Obispo Museum of Art — from William Brickel’s museum debut, I’d Tell You If I Could (2021), to Siji Krishnan’s recent solo exhibition, A Secret Place, as well as presentations of work by Sophia Narrett and Chiffon Thomas. SLOMA has served as a supportive platform for pivotal moments in each artist’s evolving career.

On June 5, SLOMA will present Alicia Adamerovich’s first museum solo exhibition, on view through October 2026.
