The Manor Library:
Upon entering this serious space, you will find its purpose and history called into question. Books, documents, and ledgers are shrink-wrapped closed and unreadable. Large colorful worm-like sculptures, which do not belong, wiggle and writhe upon the floor. Schwerner made the maquettes for these sculptures from things around his house and studio while the pandemic was raging, and fear surrounded us. The strange comedic twist they add to this somber space invites catharsis for all we’ve been through. Come on in and absorb your surroundings!

Agora: Sculptural Chairs and the Meeting Table (After Abakonowicz):
Enter, relax, and congregate. Move the chairs around. Set the table as you see fit. Make yourself at home. Think of a campfire. A tribal council. A town square. A parliament. Here is a place for us to have the difficult discussions we’ve been putting off as well as the frivolous ones we’ve been craving. We’ve spent too long apart. Political and social upheaval amidst a pandemic has strained us, and it’s time to get to know each other again.

Activist groups, trade unions, church organizations, PTAs, book clubs, political parties, goat yoga alliances, fantasy golf leagues, action figure enthusiast associations, caricature drawing fellowships, and all other societies are encouraged to sign up with Descanso to conduct a meeting here.

The Uncomfy Room:
Welcome to a pink furry bodymorphic cave; complete with a cacophony of strange sounds. This VERY serious installation is here as a sort of Rorschach test for the viewer. Will you laugh? Be offended? All the Bells:
This installation is a very personal one to Schwerner. The red ropes reference the red cotton cords worn by Buddhists, like his father, and symbolize detachment from worldly distractions. The sounds of the bells harken back to his childhood, which was filled with ringing bells and chanting. The walls are painted silver as homage to his artist mother, who painted the walls of their living room the same color when converting it into her art studio. “In this room I am finding a way to make my father and my mother inhabit the same space. They abhorred one another in real life, and it was torture for my brother and me. Here they have no choice but to be in conversation.” You are encouraged to ring the bells and add to the music echoing throughout the garden.

“The Snakeways”
These multimedia art pieces will guide you to the Sturt Haaga Gallery and Boddy House where the installations live. The Snakeways, themselves, are seven independent treelike sculptures. These sculptures act as demarcations for your travel and arch over the path to let you know that you’re on the right track. Enjoy their bold colors and help them grow by adding your own touches of flare to these alien trees.

Adventure through the gardens, the Sturt Haaga Gallery, and the historic Boddy House. With a strong emphasis on accessibility, play, and discovery this multisensory interactive exhibit aims to inform, inspire, delight, connect, and provoke visitors.
