My parents’ great grandparents sought refugee in Southeast Asia during wartime in China. My mom and her parents were born and raised in Cambodia and survived the Cambodian Genocide & Khmer Rouge. My dad and his parents were born and raised in Vietnam, & he was and still is the sole sibling to have made it to America by boat. For my parents, this gold jade necklace represents their hard work, perseverance, & achievements of making a better life for themselves here in America. For myself, this necklace is a reminder to not forget my own roots. Like many other Chinese families, we have a story of immigration and displacement. It’s important that we keep our culture rich and alive. I wish I could tell this to my younger, confused self who just thought I was “Asian” and nothing more. My name is 吳積逹. I am Chinese. I am proud of who I am, what this necklace represents, and where I come from.
