Back in June I posted the first version of this, after The Atlantic documented four AI training datasets holding more than 20 million copyrighted recordings, and at the time there were three bills in Congress. A lot of developments have happened since then.

There are four bills now and none of them are law yet, but one of them is worth knowing about if you do what I do. The Protect Working Musicians Act (H.R.9253) would let independent creators negotiate as a group, and its text names producers, mixers, and sound engineers, which none of the other three do. The catch is that it only reaches creators who own their sound recordings and earn under a million a year licensing them, so for most engineers, who work for hire, it would cover our own releases and not the client work we get hired for.

A court in Munich ruled this summer that Suno's model is itself a copy, and while that's a first instance decision that isn't final, it's the clearest signal so far that consent there is a legal requirement and not a courtesy.

Suno and Udio are both signing licenses now, but those deals reach you through your label, so BMG's covers BMG's roster and Merlin's covers the independent labels that opt in, and if you put out your own music and you're on neither, none of it covers you. That's the gap, and it's what the American Federation of Musicians is suing Universal, Warner Records, and Atlantic over.

I won't pretend all of it reaches us, because it doesn't, not yet. But that gap is exactly why I put the page together, because there wasn't anything out there built with independent artists in mind. I wanted one place you could go to understand what's happening and find something you could do about it.

What's been hard to witness was the growing sense of dread and helplessness within the music community. There's been so much fear-mongering out there, and the news changes faster than any of us can follow. The gap didn't close this summer, but it did get better documented, and that matters more than it sounds like it does because it's the difference between having a bad feeling and feeling informed and empowered to take action.

Whatever you feel about AI, the conversation keeps coming back to the same things: consent, fair compensation, keeping the human at the center. And what moves any of it is independent people advocating as a group, which is what that bill is about. So if you're looking for somewhere to start, there are twelve organizations doing this work listed on the page, and if you own your recordings, registering them with the Copyright Office is the foundation for any claim you might ever make.

Music Advocacy Day is on Thursday, October 8, and the Recording Academy sets up the meeting with your own representative and preps you beforehand, so not knowing policy going in isn't the disqualifier people assume it is. I'll be there.

Last Thursday afternoon, several interns from Women's Audio Mission spent about two hours at our building on Hollywood Blvd. They came in three small groups and rotated between three studios: Jackie's, Eva's, and my mastering studio.

Women's Audio Mission is a nonprofit that has been training women and gender expansive people in music production/engineering and the recording arts since 2003. This visit was part of their LA summer internship program, which has taken this group through a lot of facilities this summer, NASA JPL included (I would have loved to tag along for that one) 🚀

In my room, we conducted A/B listening comparisons between unmastered and mastered tracks. We talked about calibrated monitoring, gain staging, and several other mastering topics. These interns aren't beginners, and their questions showed it. Rather than focusing on audio 101, what I wanted them to take home is how they can take the principles of a mastering studio and explore how they can integrate this discipline into their own workstations.

Jackie, Eva and I have different specializations, so each group got three sets of strategies and expertise in one afternoon. When I asked what stuck with them during this visit, they said it was hearing all of our different perspectives on this industry. And that it was four studios in one building, three of which were led by women.

I hope that stays with them. Their paths are going to have challenges, the same way ours did. Community is what carries you through, and I'm glad they've found it at Women's Audio Mission.

It's an honor to have been part of their internship journey as a mastering engineer, a studio owner, and a woman in this field, and to do it alongside my good friends Eva, Jackie, and Bri.

This year's trip to the Philippines was meant to be for vacation and family time. But somehow, the timing worked out, and I'm really grateful to finally meet the Backspacer Records team in person.

On July 14, Chris and I made our way to Backspacer Records in Pasig, a vinyl label and record store run by Robert and Tasha Tuazon. We finally got to sit down and talk shop: about the state of vinyl and the music industry in the Philippines (OPM), nerding out about our shared love for music from Pearl Jam all the way to Sugarfree, and even Aegis.

Their storefront window is packed with OPM: Parokya ni Edgar, Kitchie Nadal, Ciudad, Barbie Almalbis, all lined up behind the glass. Inside, there's a mural with OPM painted across the back wall, fronting a proud, comprehensive collection of vinyl records from a wide array of Pinoy artists. This area also regularly hosts live performances ala "Tiny Desk" vibes, right where we took our group photo with the team.

I flew home even more rejuvenated for the continued growth of OPM, both locally and internationally. Already looking forward to my next balikbayan trip, with real time carved out to show up for my Pinoy music community. I also got to take home a couple of LPs I've had the honor of mastering for Backspacer (Dicta License and Urbandub). They're now sitting in my mastering studio here in LA, right next to a couple of Grammy certificates, and records mastered and cut to vinyl by a Pinay.
