Honestly I’m sad about this.
It’s a follow up to yesterday’s post.
I love rescuing fabric from landfill and I’m not afraid of climbing mountains of musty and dusty fabric to find usable material. But this stash I encountered today has been stored outside in a covered yard for over a decade. There were some beauties that I just couldn’t take because they were so damaged or piled deep under rolls that were too big for me to move. Others that were covered in animal droppings.
Apparently there were 16 machines that were stored outside and rusted.
It’s in my old neighborhood and I wish I’d been called here years ago before this fabric all sat outside for a decade.

I’d say I got almost 100 yards of fabric today, but I didn’t make a dent in what is headed to pollute the earth now.

This one is a sad rescue.

New materials in the studio…. I’m still your local textile artist, but as I’m moving into some three-dimensional work, I need to create some armatures and am experimenting with other recycled materials. I 100% will admit that I called my 21yo oldest son who is a model maker and prop designer for some advice.

Filling the car with rolls of fabric is a part of my work as an artist who uses rescued fabrics. I almost never buy fabric these days. Instead, I get a few calls a year about fabric that’s getting “thrown out if someone doesn’t come get it right away” - so I roll up, take what I can and share freely. Anything I don’t use myself goes to where I teach people to sew (I provide all the fabric!) and a lot of it is given away too.
Swipe to the end to see proof that I do actually use what I take! This are just some of the rolls I have emptied in the last 8 months.

I’ve got some hare-brained and half-baked ideas that I am pursuing for my solo show in October, so I’ve set up some big open time blocks to work on them. The last two days have been driving all over to pick up free resources. This next season of work is gonna be a little um… unique ….

In the meantime, I’m going to need to keep covering costs around here. Sign up for my newsletter to be among the people who get notified when I do my online art drop in July. There’s gonna be lots of affordable art in the sale. It’s a great way to own original art and support your friendly neighborhood recycling artist.

“Creative Cocktail Attire” was what the invitation said, so I used it as an excuse to wear the dress I put my own artwork onto.
So much fun to wear… plus it made me a few new friends.
Now I want to make more….

Studio visit day today (back and forth, between both of our spaces) with the incredible, intelligent and overall lovely human - we had 4.5 hours (!!!) of nonstop back and forth about art, philosophy, archeology, religion, family, humanity, color, sustainability - and even the fact that we both just returned from trips to Greece. I don’t think either one of us felt like we fully scratched the surface of all that is there. I’m so grateful for art friends and connections. This was a good way to spend a Friday.

Another commission sent out last week… this client is from the East Coast and found me online. We’ve never met in person, have only spoken on the phone and texted over these past few months, and yet I feel so much a part of their journey.

Sewn together from treasured fabrics and the wardrobe of a beautiful woman. Her family commissioned 4 pieces 20”x20” that would “tell a story” each individually different, but blending into one another so that it can be displayed in a cohesive line, but also as 4 individual pieces for the husband and children as they grow and take the artwork to their own homes.
Such a tender project.
Thank you, beautiful family, for including me in on this memorial project.

Been spending lots of time drawing. I’m working at filtering some of the inspiration I have collected into sketches. (Specifically Greece 🇬🇷 right now)
This is how I get from one place to another artistically. It’s not a fast process, it takes time. And time is the hardest resource for me to come by and also to protect. Each sketch is a marker of moments I fought to be present.
I have no goals for these. They will never be more than what they are. They are not a commodity, they have no monetary value. But they are priceless.

So exciting to see pics of SUNRISE WANDERER in its forever home.
I’m especially into the way the light from outside the clients’s home refracts into patterns on the walls because I was inspired to make this composition by something very similar- I was watching light refract off the edge of a paper cup and could not stop thinking about the simple beautiful shape it made…

Thanks again to for this photo and for helping this art piece find its place in the world.

RENEWAL- the sister piece to RESTORATION- which I recently posted about. This piece was one of two pieces I made to give my clients a choice for their commission- but it has since lived its own life and traveled around the US in galleries and other shows. I just got it back from its trip to Kansas where it spent the past few months. Swipe to see a few images of it in different places over the past few years. It literally looks good everywhere.

Textile art has the added effect of sound dampening and it makes a place feel quieter and warmer to have it on a wall - even in a place of business.
