I’m sharing this one in a few parts, because there’s too much meaning here to fit into one post. The FIREBIRD is the hero of this beautiful Bat Mitzvah artwork and invitation suite. Rachel is a dancer, whose signature more is the firebird. Hawaii is special to her and her family, and the firebird flower (heliconia) brings together these two pieces of her with elegance and grace, just like Rachel herself, swept up in the moment of dance or walking along the beach. Her Bat Mitzvah is a moment to reflect, and this custom artwork is hers forever. What flower or place makes your heart race? Or brings you to calm?

Lavi is a performer. An actor, a singer, someone who fills a room just by walking into it. His family knew that, and I knew just as quickly that this artwork had to hold that energy.

But then his mom mentioned his grandmother, who wasn’t well enough to make the trip for his Bar Mitzvah. They were feeling that absence quietly. Baba had been an avid gardener, known for the wisteria that draped through her yard. When this family sees wisteria, they see her.

So that’s what we did. Headphones, for the music and the performer in him. Big blossoming pink roses, as given after another performance. And WISTERIA, winding through — soft and graceful, the way she always was. She couldn’t be there in person, but she’s on his head for every moment of that day.

What an honor it is, to hold a family’s story like this — and to send it out into the world on a day this meaningful.

This is a poem I think about every time sunflowers find their way into a piece I’m making. And they do find their way in, even though I really don’t love the color yellow. Because the families I work with who ask for them aren’t just asking for something pretty. They’re asking for something that says ‘you are my light’ without having to say it out loud.

That’s the thing about meaningful symbols. They carry poetry inside of them. A sunflower worked into an invitation suite, painted into a ketubah, tucked into a family tree. It’s never just the flower. It’s the feeling the family already had, finally given a place to live. And apparently, even an artist who doesn’t love yellow will show up for that every time.

(And now maybe you’ll never look at sunflowers the same way. You’re welcome / I’m sorry!)

Every symbol in this invitation was chosen on purpose, and each one carries a piece of Elsa’s story.

The G-clef that grows like a tendril. The name hidden in its curves. The Asphodel and Iris blooming from the base, both quiet nods to a middle name full of meaning. A palette that is soft, pastel, truly lyrical.

This is what I find so meaningful about the work of designing for a Bat Mitzvah: I’m not just making something pretty for a party. I’m being invited into a family’s story and trusted to find the symbols that tell it truthfully. That kind of commission doesn’t feel like a project to me. It feels like an honor.
