Meet Alexandra Foucard and Dan Jolley, the duo behind The Storm which placed earned a FINALIST spot in our Diversity X season! More below ⬇️

The Storm Logline:
In a predominantly white Southern town, shattered by a tornado and simmering with
old hate, the first Black woman ever to wear the sheriff’s badge must outwit a ruthless serial killer.

About The Storm:
Alexandra: “Dan and I met at a book fair—two storytellers from different worlds, both
chasing truth through words. He’d written The Storm, a novel inspired by real events in his hometown in rural Georgia, penned during the term of the 45th president—now our 47th. The moment he described it, I said, ‘I’m an actor and producer… how do I option this?’ Dan smiled and said, ‘Ask nicely.’”

Dan: “I wrote The Storm because I had to. Growing up in the Deep South, surrounded
by both the best and worst of humanity, I poured those memories onto the page—in fact, a lot of what I wrote felt more journalistic than creative. I wanted to hold a mirror up to the parts of our society I knew best, both the beautiful and the hideous.”

When Alexandra came aboard, something clicked. Together, she and Dan built a
creative partnership grounded in truth, empathy, and fire. Dan’s prose carries the
rhythm and resilience of the South; Alexandra brings the lived experience of a Black
Haitian woman who’s navigated the racial and cultural storms of America—including
Georgia.

The Storm is more than a television series—it’s a cinematic catalyst. It dares to peel back the bandages we’ve used to cover America’s deepest wounds. With heart, humor, and humanity, it asks: what happens when a town—and a country—finally faces the reckoning it’s been running from?

Meet our talented writer, Oneika Mays behind the script BLUR which placed as a QF! we loved the concept behind script and we know so many can relate to the work. More below ⬇️

I wrote BLUR because I spent my teenage years being called an Oreo, told I “talked white,” and never quite fitting in anywhere. The show is my love letter to every kid who’s been too much of one thing and not enough of another—who code-switches without thinking, who feels like they’re performing identity instead of living it.
Set in 1984, BLUR follows Makeba Roosevelt on her chaotic first day at a new school, where she’s judged by Black kids and white kids alike. Through humor, heart, and a healthy dose of cringe, the show asks: What happens when you don’t fit the box? Maybe you make your own.
I’m drawn to stories about people who’ve been left out, judged, or made to feel like they don’t belong—which is also at the heart of my book Sit with Me (HarperCollins), a journey to self-worth and healing for anyone who’s ever felt tossed aside. Whether on screen or on the page, I write for the outsiders, the in-betweeners, and anyone still figuring out where they fit.

Meet the talented Haley Melikian. Haley is the writer behind 'The Fever', an exceptional work submitted to our Diversity X season which placed as a Thank you Haley for opening up and sharing your story! More from Haley below ⬇️

Wow, I am SO beyond beyond beyondddd honored and filled to the brim with appreciation for this news. Please know that it means so much to have my work recognized by this organization and has been a personal goal of mine. I submitted my script to this contest with the hope that it would resonate with whoever read it, and I’m thrilled to know that it has. Thank you to every member of the LA Screenplay Awards staff that made it happen, I appreciate your work very much.

I wrote my script, “The Fever,” after being struck by a sudden bout of baby fever which sent shockwaves through my childless-by-choice life. Any woman who’s ever declared she doesn’t want kids has been met with a smug response from a member of the parentarchy to the tune of: “Just wait… Your switch will flip.” When it happened to me, completely unexpected yet right on cue, I set off on a quest to understand whether my inexplicable desire to turn my uterus into a short-term rental was the result of a biological time bomb, or the fact that at 36, I lacked a sense of purpose that parenthood might conveniently fulfill.

The spoiler alert is this: by the time I reached the midpoint of the script, my baby fever had vanished, and laboring over the story (and my creative life as a whole) became the source of fulfillment and purpose I’d been seeking all along. Funny how that works, isn’t it?

Jovanny Guaba is the writer behind 'El Merenguero' and we hare honored to feature his work!

El Merenguero is my father's story. His journey as a key player in a drug operation while chasing his dreams in music. For those who lived it, directly or indirectly, the weight of it all was real and lasting. These stories have stayed with us, and now we're ready to share them. Real people. Real music. Real arrests. Real heartbreak. I wanted to bring our memories to life in a story rich with culture, raw emotion, and rhythm.

Meet our amazing mother & daughter comedy writing duo! We received many hilarious comedy script entries to our Diversity X season and Best Laid Plans was among the best. Congrats again on your Finalist Placement Kelly and Megan! More below ⬇️

As a mother/daughter writing team, specializing in comedy TV and features, our creative process is driven by the desire to explore the power of identity. We wrote BEST LAID PLANS through the lens of a Gen-Z and Gen-Xer questioning antiquated rules and expectations to redefine what it means to be human. We want audiences to know that there is no one right way to be human, and it can never be defined by one goal, gender, age, sexuality, or stereotype.

Our main character, Virginia is our beacon that illuminates the path to fighting for what we believe we are meant to do, while also accepting our failures and making amends for our mistakes. We’ve each fought to declare ourselves against the labels and duties assigned to us by family, friends, and institutions, and we hope this story inspires others to do the same.

Meet our Diversity X Finalist, Francine Umulisa and read more about her script 'Shadows and Light' below!

I am deeply grateful to the Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards team for recognizing this work and for creating a platform where stories like mine can be seen and celebrated. Thank you for seeing the heart in it.

Shadows and Light: The Path Beyond Division” is not just a story-it is a reckoning with memory, silence, and the generational pulse of survival. Set in the heart of a fractured Rwanda, it builds its tension between war rooms and whispered truths, protests and pulpits, and the very breath of those trying to live despite it all.

I wrote this story because so often, narratives about places like Rwanda are flattened into headlines and history books. I wanted to write from the inside out -through the voices of people most often unheard: the daughters who stay loud, the men who lead through doubt, the rebels who still believe in something softer than war ,and for the next generation who deserve narratives that don’t shy away from complexity.

This isn’t just a story about Rwanda. It’s about every nation wrestling with who gets to lead, who gets to speak, and who gets to heal. This script is my way of interrogating power, loss, and grace within systems and within ourselves.

It took years of listening, learning, and unlearning to shape this. It honors the stories I’ve come from, the questions I still carry, and the people who live between shadows and light every single day.

Q&A with our Best Short Screenplay Winner from Spring 2024: Tammy Klein & her script, ‘Bridge to Anymore’

🌟What was the inspiration for your winning script?

Several factors inspired this story. I’ve always been drawn to military narratives and enjoy books by former Navy SEALs. Although I served as a mechanic, many of my friends experienced combat during their tours in the Middle East. I was fortunate not to serve in conflict, but I often wonder what kind of airman I might have been under such pressure.
Another key inspiration came from a short film I saw in sixth grade, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce. Combining these ideas, I envisioned my character—a former Marine—sitting alone on a trestle bridge on a hot summer day. From there, I filled in the rest of the details.

🌟Describe your writing process. Do you work from an outline...or do you just start with FADE IN?

I work from an outline. I need to have lines to color in. It's way too easy to stray off track and forget where I’m going.

🌟Was your winning script a first draft...or had you received coverage that helped improve your work as a second or third draft?

I wrote the first drafts of my screenplay in a class taught by Carrie Wilson at LAVC. She liked my work and encouraged me to develop it further. My writing partner, Glenn Campbell, also provided feedback that helped me strengthen the story.
At the end of the semester, I submitted Bridge to a contest (which I won't name) to receive early coverage. The feedback was encouraging, but the reader noted that, given the prevalence of stories about soldiers with PTSD, my script felt a bit cliché. He suggested adding a twist to make it stand out.
As a fan of sci-fi anthology shows like The Outer Limits, Black Mirror and Love, Death & Robots, I decided to keep most of the original story while adding five more pages and tweaking it to create a sci fi twist at the end.

🌟Which film or television writers have inspired your work...and how?

Ronald D. Moore: He had/has a hand in much of my favorite sci fi.

Steven Moffat: Coupling is wonderful for its tight intelligent banter.

David Kelley: Again, many of his shows such as Boston Legal have tight banter in addition to interesting characters.

Nora Ephron: Strong quirky female characters, warmth. Her films make you feel good. Mario Puzo: The Godfather’ script is a masterpiece of word economy.

Craig Mazin: That third episode of Season One of The Last of Us was amazing. He got away with stuff my film school teachers and writing partner dislike, but I thought was wonderful. It's good to be the boss.

🌟What’s your #1 favorite movie or television series...and why?

Oh geez, that’s tough. It used to just be Star Trek (TOS), but there are just too many good shows and movies out there. However, I am anxiously awaiting the next seasons of The Boys, The Last of Us, Bridgerton, Reacher, Black Mirror, Good Omens, and Love, Death & Robots. I’m also binging a lot of K-Dramas lately.

🌟What has been your greatest challenge as a writer?

Sorting out my ideas. It's hard sometimes to find a clear path through the forest of ideas that want to be chosen.

🌟What advice do you have for writers hoping to win a prestigious contest as you have?

Don’t quit. Every time you write, you get better. And though its preferable to learn from other people’s mistakes, learn from your own as well. I make lots and try to learn from them all!

Q&A with Gerald Smith, our LAISA Winter 2024 Feature Screenplay Winner with his incredible script 'The Good Club':

💥What was the inspiration for your winning script?

Just about everyone was impacted in some way by the COVID-19 virus. Toss in with that the idea that its release from a Wuhan laboratory was a top contender for Conspiracy Theory of the Year. I merely put the two together and took it to the next level: what if the COVID virus was intentionally constructed and released by a private group of billionaires as a test program for a more lethal method to secretly shape population control – but it goes amok. Once I got going, I just let my imagination take over.

💥Describe your writing process. Do you work from an outline...or do you just start with FADE IN?

I typically visualize my thoughts in my head, as if seeing them in a movie, then type what I see onto a Word document in an outline-like form (not necessarily a true outline, per se). I then begin to fill in more details, and finally begin typing everything into a script format.

💥What’s your #1 favorite movie or television series...and why?

There are really too many to list, but I greatly admire work that...
1. Has an unexpected major plot twist at the end (e.g., The Sixth Sense, Planet
of the Apes, etc.)
2. Shows exceptional uniqueness, imagination, and creativity (e.g., Forest Gump,
Avatar, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Minority Report, etc.), and 3. Delves into the mystery of the subconscious (e.g., Inception, Mulholland
Drive, The Wizard of Oz, etc.)

💥What has been your greatest challenge as a writer?

Getting people to read/appreciate my work.

💥Have you made any further progress in your writing career?

I recently completed my 4th feature script and have a few more concepts on my drafting board, including one TV series.

💥What advice do you have for writers hoping to win a prestigious contest as you have?

Don’t get discouraged – keep on writing, refining your work, and pressing towards your goal.
