This might be my favorite quote of the year.
For most of my 20s and early 30s, I wanted freedom.
I wanted to be able to do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. I didn’t want responsibility. I didn’t want too much consistency or discipline.
I thought that was freedom.
But honestly?
It often felt like Groundhog Day.
The same patterns.
The same mental states.
The same places I would get stuck.
Then, in 2014, I discovered men’s work.
And it changed my life.
At first, I didn’t understand why I needed to commit to a daily practice. Why consistency mattered. Why showing up when I didn’t feel like it mattered.
But over time, I began to understand.
Discipline didn’t take away my freedom. It gave me a pathway to it.
Now, each year feels different.
The days can still be tedious. There is resistance. There are days when I don’t want to do the work.
But there is also movement.
Goals get hit.
Patterns get broken.
Relationships deepen.
I become more accountable.
I have brothers who support me—and who I get to support in return.
And slowly, steadily, I become more of who I am.
That is what has been so transformative about this work for me:
Steady growth.
Never being stuck for too long.
Knowing that resistance is part of the path—and showing up anyway.
And discovering that there is so much joy on the other side of doing what needs to be done.
In October, we begin the 7th year of The Creative Masculine Leadership Training.
Seven years of doing the work.
Seven years of men becoming more themselves.
Seven years of accountability, leadership, brotherhood, creativity, service and play.
I don’t believe freedom is the absence of responsibility anymore.
I believe freedom is becoming the kind of man who can meet responsibility with strength, presence and gratitude.
And finding joy along the way. 💪
