I never told my eight-year-old daughter that I was a judge, and her school didnāt know either. To them, I was just a friendly, single motherāeasy to bully. One day, I picked her up early and found her badly mistreated by a teacher and confined inside the equipment room. When I confronted the teacher with the video I had recorded, she sneered, āYour daughter is too stupid. This is how I discipline students.ā The principal cut in coldly, āIf you release that video, weāll expel your child and blacklist her.ā They laughed, convinced they had crushed me. I picked up my daughter, walked out, and left them with one sentence: āLetās see who ends up on the blacklist.ā
The air in Principal Hallowayās office was suffocating. He sat pompously behind his massive oak desk, while Mrs. Gableāthe teacher who had confined my daughter in a janitorial closet and struck herāstood there playing the victim.
"Mrs. Vance," Halloway said patronizingly. "Context is everything. Your daughter is difficult and slow. Mrs. Gable is an award-winning educator. Her methods are intense, yes, but effective. Sometimes, a firm hand is needed to break a stubborn will."
"You call serious misconduct 'excellence'?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "You call locking an eight-year-old alone in a dark room 'education'?"
"I call it discipline," Halloway retorted, his fake smile vanishing to reveal the ruthless bureaucrat beneath. "Now, delete that video."
"Excuse me?"
Halloway leaned forward. "Listen carefully, Mrs. Vance. We know your situation. Single mother, struggling to keep up with the Oakridge lifestyle. If you release that video, we will blacklist your daughter. I will write a report stating she attacked a teacher. She will be expelled, permanently barred from any decent private school. Her future will be irreversibly damaged."
Mrs. Gable smirked from the corner. "Who are they going to believe? An institution with a hundred-year legacy, or a single mom with a lying child?"
My blood ran cold. This was their game. They preyed on parental fear...
"So," I stood up slowly. "That is your final position? You are threatening to ruin a childās future to cover up wrongdoing?"
"Absolutely," Halloway sneered. "Delete the video, apologize to Mrs. Gable, and maybe we won't expel her today."
I looked at Halloway. I thought about the black robe hanging in my chambers, about the power of a Federal Circuit Justiceāsomeone who could sign arrest warrants, command U.S. Marshals, and send men like him to prison for decades.
I smiled. It was a smile that made Halloway pause...
"You mentioned the Police Chief is your friend?"
