Should you travel internationally for your first aerial retreat? 🌍

The short answer: it depends, and that’s okay.

International retreats can be incredibly inspiring. Training in a new environment often brings focus, fresh motivation, and the chance to fully step away from daily routines. For some students, that immersion is exactly what helps everything click.

That said, traveling abroad also adds layers: time zone changes, possible higher costs, longer travel days, and less flexibility if you need to rest or adjust. For a first retreat, it’s important to consider how comfortable you are navigating new places while training intensively.

Check in with yourself and check in with the retreat outline. If it feels like a match, you have your answer!

Choosing between silks, hoop, trapeze, or mixed apparatus training 🎪

Each apparatus offers something different and the “best” choice depends on your goals.

Silks often emphasize endurance, sequencing, and adaptability. They’re a great option if you enjoy fluid movement, wraps, and problem-solving through transitions.

Hoop (lyra) tends to focus on shapes, strength, and precision. Many students are drawn to its clear structure and the ability to explore both dynamic and sculptural movement.

Trapeze offers a balance of power and control, often blending strength, swing/spin, and technique. It’s well-suited for students who enjoy momentum and defined pathways.

Mixed apparatus training can be valuable if you’re looking to broaden your skill set, cross-train, or prepare for teaching, as it highlights transferable fundamentals across disciplines.

Progress in aerial training isn’t linear. Periods where nothing seems to change often happen after your body and nervous system have absorbed a new level of demand. Strength, coordination, and confidence are still developing, even when visible progress feels paused.

Plateaus can also signal that your body needs time to adapt. As skills become more complex, improvements shift from obvious gains to subtle refinements in technique, control, and efficiency.

In many cases, plateaus are a sign of consolidation, not stagnation. They’re part of the process of building durable skills that last beyond a single trick or sequence.

Consistency, rest, and patience matter just as much as intensity. Progress doesn’t disappear during quiet phases, it settles in 💪
