I don’t know when the store is opening. I am doing everything I can to prepare for the opening without losing my sanity. My dad/GC is giving his all. My mom is going above and beyond and - this is between you and me - unfortunately she lost a good chunk of cash to an online investment “opportunity” (this was unbeknownst to me when in progress 😓) … she doesn’t have much, and yet was trying to help.

We are at this point nearly halfway through the 5 year lease. After 2+ years of paying for permits, buildout costs, equipment, 1 year’s worth of rent, moving and storage fees, and insurance we don’t have much left in the bank. Oh and yes did we dutifully pay taxes. During this permitting & buildout period we weren’t able to operate at a high enough capacity to bring in regular income, which would have been fine for a year, but not 2 years and 4 months with no end date in sight.

Please help if you can, even if you can’t give right now you can share our Gofundme link in bio 🔗🙏 Thank you for supporting Gu 🍄‍🟫💕

Using our voices and our bodies to demand for tenant protection in Chinatown amidst imposed rent increases while the reality for most is income is not rising at that same rate, or at all (seniors on fixed income).

Joining my neighbors and tenant groups from neighboring neighborhoods for the march for rent was extremely moving. I’m so grateful to be part of such a caring community full of heart!

This march was a powerful experience, on both a personal level and beyond. Healthcare costs doubled for me this year. My rent went up. I’m still freelancing. I’m still trying to open Gu where I can create jobs for myself and others. Between my dad and I we paid an entire year of rent on the storefront. We have since been granted a freeze on rent, but trying to recover from the damage.

I got to see what my friend Xochitl is going through at the William Mead projects where she lives and is organizing with .la to prevent displacement of the residents there.

We are being asked to give away our limited resources to continue benefiting the already advantaged. While this is absurd, tenant organizers like have successfully demanded tenant protections from the city in the past, and we continue to fight alongside our neighbors to claim what is rightfully ours to keep. Like Taery said, “We are the Mountain!”

QT (quick trip) Travelogue Pt. 2

Reflections on a pile of ancient rubble while mending a broken heart ❤️‍🩹

I encountered this grand pile in January at a petroglyph preserve in Arizona. In the process of making sense of my inner landscape while releasing rage and grief, I found it grounding and freeing to see the boulders cared for and the wild lichen colonies flourishing all over them studied just as closely as the petroglyph marks.

A lot has happened since that trip. I’ve been finding the algae to my fungus these days and embracing momentum, ideally at 88 miles per hour 💫

Lately, tenderness

Some feelings simmer, some melt
Caught between various densities
Ate some but never alone
Biting through the Q

Got wrapped in the best blankets woven by buddy friends
Floating in an expanse of feel everything
Love’s in need/don’t delay

Visiting Nai Nai, I heard her cry for the first time
I let my dad feed me a morsel of tasty leftovers from his hand as he packed me a container to go
When I unpacked the bag there was much more

Moments from the first week of Lunar New Year 🐴❤️‍🔥

There’s still so much I can’t be sure about, but I’m done feeling doomed. I’m just happy to be here with you where there’s room for light to fill, and the 8’s keep on coming!

Dear Desert and Desert Dwellers, thank you for the warmest embrace and space to shed and make room for light. Love you 🪨💫

Rubble and mossy rocks, reflections on a most rocky year gone by. Rocks pose various obstacles and opportunities alike:

🪨 Prone to detachment, precarious toppling and blockage
🪨 A stable surface to attach to and grow (moss)
🪨 Pathway to cross currents
🪨 Support structure in a dynamic situation
🪨 Plenty of rough edges for rounding

May we all find more meaning in the rocks among us this year ☺️

I encountered healing at the rocks at Placerita Canyon on my birthday and hope you too will go visit them some time 💫

I let my compost planter go wild this year and it has been sustaining a wild ecosystem. I love the little lessons it has taught me, and am grateful for the opportunity to observe cycles of growth.

I plugged in epiphyllum and dragonfruit clippings, bb basil and chili seedlings but everybody else sprung up on their own 🌱

Imagine loving one food - that’s also your house - so much you eat bits of it every day for every meal… I am fascinated by the katydid resident/eater of the loquat tree 👀 (like why can’t my life be more simple)

As I set intentions for the coming months and welcome new growth from what is now going in the compost pile, I am letting go to trust.
