Evoladad Productions

Evoladad Productions Evoladad is a performance art company based out of Atlanta that promotes brave works of theater for and by black women.

Love leadership is emphasized as a vehicle of group healing, community engagement and impactful world change. Evoladad Productions was founded in 2017 by Shannon Dada as a way to promote and support brave works of theatre by and for black women. Deeply disappointed and discouraged by entertainment media focused on black female conflict, Shannon Dada wrote a play called “No Name” that specifically

featured diverse black women telling the true narratives of their lives. The excellence of the writing and the raw truth of the play brought black actresses in Atlanta together at auditions and casting calls to discuss among other things, the hardships of the entertainment business for black women with little to no work or highly sexualized or stereotyped roles. There were only 8 roles in the play with a standing room only crowd of black women. It was then that Shannon realized the need to employ talented black actresses with acting roles that would extend far beyond the lines of her debut play, thus Evoladad was born. "No Name" debuted February 3rd in Atlanta and sold out after a double recap to a standing room only crowd of over 300. "No Name" is coming to West Hollywood for it's next show run February 2020.

Sophocles’ Greek Tragedy “Antigone” by The Classical Theater of Harlem🔥This modern rendition is so beautifully done. Antigone has lost her two brothers and one of them does not get a proper burial from the government that killed him. She goes to bury him with honor & love will not be changed come life or death.

How amazing was the all black cast of Broadway’s Best Shakespeare in The Park this past winter? Here’s a scene from their modern take on Margaret’s taunting appeal to Beatrice about Benedick from Act 3. Mark how one to the other did indeed on stage dispatch *yes you in the back* (killed it!) 💯 Me thinks it a full melanin maids three snaps!🤣

In 1997 David Harewood became the first Black man to play Othello at The National Theatre. Shakespeare wrote, “The Tragedy of Othello, The Moor of Venice” in 1603. White audiences did not think a Black man could be intelligent enough to play Othello as he was written to be by Shakespeare so he was for centuries played by white actors in Black face. Even now the prejudice & stigma of Black actors playing leading classical roles sadly persists as evidenced by the hateful criticism and death threats David Oyelowo received playing Henry VI for The Royal Shakespeare Company.

So few know the name of this epic Jazz pianist who did so much for Black women in theatre & film at a time when it was not only unpopular but unheard of! Hazel Scott was black listed for being uncompromising in her desire for dignified roles for Black women. She was cast in a film as a pianist where all the Black wives of soldiers wore dirty aprons. For three days she refused to film until all their aprons were changed to floral dresses. Thank you for all the sacrifices you made that give us joy in nostalgia. No matter how intentional the attempt to erase you from history, you are not obscure to us.❤️

Hail the queen mother of all Black actresses Cecily Tyson. 👑 The Oscar winner for Lifetime Achievement still going at 94 years old! Tears flow thinking of her contributions to who we are as a company today.😭 Where would ANY black actress be without her? This gem is from her 1956 debut, “Carib Gold” it was never given the credit that it deserved.😔 But it isn’t obscure because it went without attention from those who could not perceive for reasons of the cast’s color its merit. This is our classic Hollywood actress her work is GOLD to us.

In divided times, those who tell different stories of different people with equal merit are the bravest healers we have.

All I’ve ever aspired to achieve personally and professionally came true on that day. All I’ve asked for is the chance to make a day like this REAL. Unity, connections, bonds, sisterhood, & diversity.😭 Nothing can touch what that day meant to me. I will never leave my ❤️ behind, it made this possible, it brought us here. 🕊

Acting is not a hobby for us. It’s a calling and a craft. It is the source of healing our own wounds and the vehicle for being the voice of the voiceless. What happens off stage is as real as what we bring on stage. These are real stories, our stories. This is our purpose. 🎬 🎭

Black Women’s Stories Are Diverse.

Why does a story matter? We learn from stories. We evaluate other humans based on how we’ve heard their story told. Evoladad Productions is a theatre production company that focuses on bringing brave works of theatre around the true stories of black women to the stage. There are so many expressions of black feminine identity and we care about showing what that looks and feels like. We believe in crafting authentic narratives that are dignified and dimensional. We honor audiences by honoring the actors that bring the work together.
