Gene Watson’s birthday was on October 11. I meant to post the beginning of my poem “Gene Watson” from EJECT CITY on the great singer’s big day, but hell, I’ve got 20 jobs.

So here it belatedly is. I will add that El Compadre in Hollywood (there’s another one in Echo Park) has been important to me over the years. I went there a lot before the kids were born. I wrote much of my PhD dissertation at the bar, along with many of the poems that comprise EJECT CITY.

James Woods used to pop in. Quentin Tarantino. A beautiful old surfer with a long white beard. Once this character actor from 80s tv came in and expected to be heralded like Cheney’s dream of US troops in Baghdad. When longtime bartender Carlos shrugged and said he didn’t recognize the actor, the guy couldn’t believe it: “Really? For ten years I came here every day.” I loved that moment for its abysmal reassurance.
