The Laband Art Gallery is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs that illustrate that the visual arts are a critical component of society. As a university art gallery, the Laband features exclusive exhibitions that may not be found in other civic or private museums. In doing so, the gallery showcases art that has relevance across multiple disciplines as well the broader community. Since 1984, the gallery has produced approximately three exhibitions per school year, including Young Contemporaries: Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition. The gallery also collaborates with various departments on campus to create related public programs that help enrich the experience garnered from each exhibition. We hope you’ll visit us often, and find intriguing exhibitions that will spark dialogue, generate unexpected ideas and inspire your own creativity.

The Laband is delighted to debut a 15-year survey of Los Angeles-based artist Phyllis Green. Green’s practice is an ongoing exploration of her lived experience—examining both her own physicality and how the human form is collectively represented. The exhibition includes more than 25 of Green’s insightful and witty sculptural, wearable, and performative objects that interact directly with the body and its environs.

It is with great pride and reverence that we share highlights of the Laband ‘s 1987 David Hockney’s solo show “Portrait Drawings 1966-1984” curated by our founding director Ellen Ekedal (1942 – 2024). This exhibition included more than 70 superlative works on paper depicting the artist’s close circle of friends and family and executed in crayon, ink, charcoal, and pencil. The accompanying catalog “Faces 1966-1984”—designed and authored by Hockney himself—transformed the artist’s artworks through the experimental use of an office photocopier.

with your unique presence and professionalism. Thank you for balancing your studies at LMU with your position as

Congratulations to Krystal Nava who received the Laband Director’s Prize! Krystal explains, “’Ode to
Los Angelenos’ is a painting demonstrating how I have found my culture in iconic LA Chicano
symbols mixed with Americana ideals/symbolism. With our current political climate targeting
immigrants, I feel it is important to comment on this issue and question our idealized image of the
‘average’ American especially in the context of Los Angeles, an American city with deep roots to
Mexican culture and influence.

This painting is a self-portrait loaded with lots of symbolic details: I am wearing Chola-inspired
makeup from the 1990s popularized by LA Chicana women. This style symbolizes rebellion,
a rejection of mainstream beauty ideals that has origins dating back to the 1940s.”
Krystal is receiving her BFA in Studio Arts with a minor in Art History.
