This is a free gallery located at Loyola Marymount University to showcase artist ranging from studen

The Laband Art Gallery is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs that illustrate that the visual arts are a critical component of society. As a university art gallery, the Laband features exclusive exhibitions that may not be found in other civic or private museums. In doing so, the gallery showcases art that has relevance across multiple disciplines as well the broader community.

Since 1984, the gallery has produced approximately three exhibitions per school year, including Young Contemporaries: Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition. The gallery also collaborates with various departments on campus to create related public programs that help enrich the experience garnered from each exhibition. We hope you’ll visit us often, and find intriguing exhibitions that will spark dialogue, generate unexpected ideas and inspire your own creativity.

Rudy, Clarke, Sarah, Jessie, Annie, Serena, Kelsey, and Reese—each of you has contributed to the Laband’s success
with your unique presence and professionalism. Thank you for balancing your studies at LMU with your position as
gallery assistants. We are incredibly proud of everything you have accomplished and are excited to see the impact
that you will make in your next chapter.

Congratulations to Krystal Nava who received the Laband Director’s Prize! Krystal explains, “’Ode to
Los Angelenos’ is a painting demonstrating how I have found my culture in iconic LA Chicano
symbols mixed with Americana ideals/symbolism. With our current political climate targeting
immigrants, I feel it is important to comment on this issue and question our idealized image of the
‘average’ American especially in the context of Los Angeles, an American city with deep roots to
Mexican culture and influence.

This painting is a self-portrait loaded with lots of symbolic details: I am wearing Chola-inspired
makeup from the 1990s popularized by LA Chicana women. This style symbolizes rebellion,
a rejection of mainstream beauty ideals that has origins dating back to the 1940s.”
Krystal is receiving her BFA in Studio Arts with a minor in Art History.

whose mixed-media installation
“Consumed, Unseen” was honored
with the JURORS’ FIRST PRIZE award
in the Laband’s 42nd Annual Juried
Student Exhibition.

Sophia ‘26 is receiving her BFA with
an emphasis in Visual
Communication Design.

The juried student exhibition

“Consumed, Unseen is a personal
homage to my family and to my
Mexican heritage on my father’s
side. I come from a family of
immigrants, and this work reflects
how immigrant culture and labor,
especially within the Latino
community, are celebrated,
replicated, and profited from in
American media, while the people
behind it are often marginalized and
overlooked.

The posters use bold color and
typography to reflect how culture is
made visually appealing and easy to
consume. In contrast, the illuminated
lamp presents black-and-white
imagery that points to labor,
migration, and generational struggle.
Together, the work highlights the
gap between what is made visible
and what remains unseen, inviting
viewers to reflect on their
relationship to cultural
consumption.”

helping to promote ‘Now Be Here’s’ 10-year anniversary celebration and a full day of artist-centered
programming, ‘Now Let’s Talk, Los Angeles,’ presented at Oxy Arts (Occidental College).

Are you an artist? Join Now Be Here on May 31, 2026, when Now Be Here marks its 10-year
anniversary with a new community photo and full day of artist-centered programming titled Now
Let’s Talk, Los Angeles.

The day will begin with a community photo of women and non-binary artists. (9 - 11 am)

Artists and arts workers of all gender expressions are invited to attend the Now Let’s Talk, Los
Angeles programming, including Panel Discussions and Community Conversations. (11 am - 3 pm)

Now Let’s Talk, Los Angeles is presented by a coalition of 50+ regional arts organizations, and made
possible through generous donations by Artlogic, ArtConverge, East West Bank, and Claremont
