6-7PM ARTIVISM WORKSHOP - FOCUS: ETHICAL CHOICES
Artivism = Art-Based Activism. Join us for a pre-Drop-In Class workshop on how to incorporate the social (not necessarily political, but sometimes there's overlap) issue of making ETHICAL CHOICES in our improv or any artistic expression (i.e. poetry, graphic design, music, sculpting, dance). What are the ethics you live by? How can you stand by your ethics in your day-to-day choices (i.e. at the grocery store, in your friendships, with transportation)? It's not easy! Let's amplify awareness and create commentary about living with realistic integrity through writing, storytelling, and improv. All are welcome! Let's create art that makes a difference.

Jacqui will be leading our weekly Drop-In Class focused on the theme of OPPORTUNITY. Because Beginner Improv starts on Monday, we probably won't have the room to split the class if it gets too large like we usually do. On the bright side, The Clinic now has AC! Bring a friend!

JACQUI is an actor, improviser and certified therapist. Her improv training hails from Rogue, UCB, Monkey Butler and APO Arts Academy (Australia). She has performed in Los Angeles at UCB, The Ledge, The Clubhouse, and Rogue as well as at various theaters throughout Australia. She has performed long form with teams Fever and TBD as well as is half of the husband-wife duo team What’s Cookin’?

Let's get back to the basics! Julie will cover Agreement, Relationships, Characters, Point of View, Space Work, as well as what makes a good scene and what makes you a good scene partner. Students will get lots of stage time and feedback. This class is designed for folks who have no improv experience, or for those who have been doing a bit of improv for a while but never really got the basics. To cap it off, there will be a class performance after the third and final class to put your new/refreshed skills to good use!

It needs to be said. Things to avoid: Stereotyping - especially based on gender, ethnicity, or age (i.e. if you're in a scene with someone you perceive as older than you doesn't mean you have to label them a grandparent- or parent for that matter); playing caractitures of people groups you do not personally represent (this includes accents); and talking over anyone, especially women.

These rules are here so everyone can feel safe and taken care of. We want you to be able to express your creativity freely! Let's be better improvisers, teammates, and humans!

Speed Teaming - Find Your Improv Team has been rescheduled for October! We'll be teaming up with Community Improv, The H.I.T, WE Improv, and Giant Improv to create a large pool of eligible improvisers looking for a team. We did this last year and it was a blast- more info to come! And stay tuned to other workshops and opportunities that may pop up during September!

September's Challenge: There's a difference between pursuing an opportunity and being an opportunist. An opportunist puts personal gain above loyalty, honesty, or the common good. They change their views/behavior depending on what benefits them the most. They treat people like stepping stones and appear only when they need something. Los Angeles is full of opportunists- after all, how else do you accomplish your ambition in such a competitive city? For our own sanity, we might need to reframe this mentality and check our priorities. People, friendships, community, connection - these often are the lifeblood of healthy living. What, you're going to achieve your goals but have no one to share it with? Plus, seizing opportunities can be done without stepping on someone else's toes. Be genuine, be sincere, put in the work- shortcuts don't exist. And if they do (and don't cause harm), share them! Which leads to how we can GO ROGUE: provide opportunities for others. Share or give away something that also benefits you. Create with someone else in mind. It could be a recommendation, a potential job, or knowledge. Don't be a hoarder! Life is not a competition. It's far too precious and nuanced. Opportunity knocks. It just doesn't always have to be your door.

Hosted by Michael Sielaff, the Rogue Variety Show will showcase improv by Splong (Kit DeZolt, Grace Ricard, Denise Pickering, Rebeca Tsao, Max Schafer) and a Teacher Armando (Joy Mamey, Denny Siegel, Jacqui Sim Hirsch, Michael Sielaff, & More!); Artivism by Lou Ironhand; as well as feature first-person stories by Jen Curcio & Ian Farley!

Celebrate Labor Day with Rogue!

Instead of class this Monday, September 7th join us for a Labor Day Picnic at North Hollywood Park (approximate address below)! We'd LOVE to see you! The details:

What: Labor Day Picnic from 4-8pm on Monday, Sept. 7th

We'll be in our usual spot just west of the library and on the northside of Magnolia Blvd. Michael Sielaff will be the point person for the picnic so feel free to call/text him if you can't find us or get lost at 763-567-0317.

Please Bring: Games, frisbees, tennis rackets (there are courts nearby), glove/baseball, wiffle ball/bat, super soakers, bubbles, a kickball, your own food/drinks, food/drink to share, friends, family, pets, enemies, respect, puppets, a person named Tammy, sunscreen, a magic-eye book, a mini trampoline, mismatching socks, laughter, compliments, an elementary school art project, and anything else to keep yourself entertained.

We'll have a small gas-powered grill, so feel free to bring grillable food (hamburgers, hotdogs, veggies, etc).

Monday Night Improv will resume next week on September 14th with Jacqui Sim teaching on OPPORTUNITY for the weekly Drop-In Class and Julie Silverstein starting a 3-week Beginner Improv Class (there's still time/room to sign up!). Next Monday will also feature an Artivism Workshop before improv at 6pm. Join the fun!

Master the basics of improv!

Every Monday night, Rogue offers a drop-in improv class focused on the theme of the month. Because we get a mixed bag of improvisers from all experience levels, we don't often go over the foundational building blocks of improv. Well, this class will help fix that! Join us for a 3-week crash course in Beginner Improv with Rogue leader Julie Silverstein! Here are the details:

What: Beginner Improv with Julie Silverstein
When: Mondays, September 14, 21, & 28 from 7-10pm (Class Performance on 9/28 at 9p)

Julie completed the training programs at L.A's Groundlings and Phoenix’s Torch Theatre and has studied with many amazing teachers, including David Razowsky and Jill Bernard. She has performed short-form improv for 10 years as a member of Comedy Sportz (Buffalo) and NCT (Phoenix) as well as improvising regularly on several long-form troupes such as Rogue Warriors, The Accidentals (duo), and Las Locas (trio). Julie has been involved with Rogue since 2024 as a student, teacher, and is currently on their leadership team.

Storytelling...like writing a novel or making a movie? Not quite...

Check out 'Going The Extra Mile' by Luanne Fox Sims as an example of and inspiration for your own first-person storytelling. All are welcome to workshop and develop your own personal stories (trust us, you're a natural!) at Rogue twice a month. Join us in Los Feliz this Wednesday to explore your experiences with September's theme of OPPORTUNITY. The details:

To kick off this night of stories, Tess McCarthy will guide you in an hour of storytelling exercises. Whether you're relatively new to the idea of telling stories about your life or are currently performing around town, you'll be met where you're at and given helpful tips on how to make your story as impactful as it was when you lived it!

Right after the workshop, there will be a storytelling open-mic. You can either just sit back and watch or put your name in the hat to be selected to tell your own 5-7 minute first-person story! All stories told should connect in some way to September's themes...

There was major push back when films started to have spoken dialogue in the late 1920s. Legendary silent film actor Lillian Gish stated "I never approved of talkies. Silent movies were well on their way to developing an entirely new art form. It was not just pantomime, but something wonderfully expressive." (Rogue is hosting a movie night on Sunday, August 30th featuring silent film One Week and a film with tension-building silence in High Noon - RSVP to join us) Let's go back in time and explore, for one final time this month, using SILENCE in our art and improv on Monday, August 31st at The Clinic in Mar Vista:

BILL is an alumnus of Improv Olympic and Second City in Chicago; has toured the country with the traveling Second City troupe in the 90's with the likes of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, & Rachel Dratch; and, in 2004, Bill founded The Improv Trick. August's Challenge: Let your actions speak louder than words. GO ROGUE by showing, not telling, people how much you value them. It's one thing to say "Oh, you're great," it's another to do something (buy them lunch, get them a thoughtful gift, invite them to hangout) to show them you think they're great. Words of Affirmation are sometimes needed, but this month push yourself to deliver Actions of Affirmation. Anyone can talk a big game, but can you back it up? Try!

This Sunday there are multiple silence-centric, mind-flexing opportunities to join Rogue on the eastside in Filipinotown! The details for Sunday, August 30th:

4-6PM IMPROV LAUGHTIVISM - FOCUS: SELF CARE
Laughtivism = Comedic Activism. There are so many ways to un-silence for yourself and others beyond traditional activism spaces! Join us Sunday in honoring National Wellness Month by focusing on the theme of SELF CARE in our improv. How can you turn something important into something funny without making fun of it? Great question! First, punch up, not down - who holds the power/high status and can our comedy expose this imbalance? Also, humor can come from places other than what you want to advocate for (i.e. a character trait or an unexpected location). We'll use these and other methods to create improv comedy as well as a dash of discussion to unpack the ups and downs of wellness in a world surrounded by unhealthy habits. Humor can open us up and [playfully] challenge ourselves and the audience to think. Join an improv jam that involves scenes that ask questions and reveal nuance! Give it a try. :)

6-9PM 'HIGH NOON' & 'ONE WEEK' VIEWING/CONVERSATION
Join us in watching two films that showcase the power of silence (Rogue's theme this month)! The first is High Noon (94% on Rotten Tomatoes), the 1952 American Western starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly that serves as a powerful political allegory for the Hollywood blacklist and the Red Scare. The plot, which occurs in real time, centers on a town marshal whose sense of duty is tested when he must decide to either face a gang of killers alone, or leave town with his new wife. Upon its release, High Noon received mixed reviews, as critics and audiences expecting typical Western action were surprised by the film's focus on moral and emotional conflict. Though controversal at the time of its release due to its political themes, the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards (and won four, including Best Actor for Cooper) as well as four Golden Globe Awards. In 1989, the film was selected by the Library of Congress as one of the first 25 films for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Next we'll watch the 20 minute silent film One Week starring Buster Keaton. One review stated "If Keaton broke loose in a museum he'd tickle the mummies to life again. You never knew such fast and furious fun as this clever comedian provokes." Another agreed: "It is two reels in length and every foot of the two reels is packed with comedy situations and 'gags' that would start cackles at an undertaker's convention." By early 1921, the film was being termed "one of the famous Buster Keaton comedies." Celebrate silence with two classic films this Sunday! All are welcome to join the party to view and discuss!

Feel free to bring dinner with ya! There are also multiple places nearby to grab a bite: Tommy's, Taco Bell, Crawford's (fried chicken), a taco stand, and Smart & Final for all you TV Dinner enthusiasts. Please bring snacks and drinks (I'll throw a few frozen pizzas in the oven as well)! After the film, we'll talk about its message and application for today. It's book club for movie lovers!

6-7PM ARTIST ROUNDTABLE/ACCOUNTABILITY: SHARE WISDOM & SET GOALS
Consider your artistic journey- where has it been and where do you want it to go? If you could use some support, encouragement, or advice, join us before improv and get your career back on track (we'll start promptly at 6 so we can hear everyone's goals). Here are a few reflections we'll use as a jumping off point: How can you silence your inner critic? What do you need to silence in your life in order to achieve your artistic goals? Let's reflect, grow, and set some goals together! AND this time you'll be paired up with another artist who also wants an accountability partner to keep them on track. Time to move closer to the career we want!

7-10PM MEDITATIVE IMPROV CLASS WITH JOY MAMEY!
Joy will be leading our weekly Drop-In Class focused on the theme of SILENCE through Meditative Improv. If the class gets too large, we'll split it up so everyone can get in more reps. Bring a friend!

Joy is a 22+ year improviser who has been seen on commercials for Monopoly ESPN and more. She’s an alumnus of the Groundlings Sunday Company, and a tour guide on the world-famous Universal Studios Tour. She performs sketch, improv and stand up all over Los Angeles.

EMBRACE SILENCE AT ROGUE:
1. QUIET DISTRACTIONS: Unplug for the evening, be present! If you need to use your phone, please go outside to use it. Your teacher and classmates will appreciate your focused support and commitment.
2. BE THOUGHTFUL: Please do not invade another's personal space by touching them (i.e. hugs, picking them up, jumping on their back, etc.). Everyone may have different boundaries, but in an open class with a mix of acquaintances and strangers, it's safest to just not go there.
3. CONSIDER YOUR CONTENT: Be aware of the content of your scenes. Anything racist, sexist, ageist, culturally insensitive, or out-of-bounds/cringe-worthy is not allowed. Duh right? It needs to be said. Things to avoid: Stereotyping - especially based on gender, ethnicity, or age (just because you're in a scene with someone you perceive as older than you doesn't mean you have to label them a grandparent- or parent for that matter); playing caractitures of people groups you do not personally represent (this includes accents); and talking over anyone, especially women.

These rules are here so everyone can feel safe and taken care of. We want you to be able to express your creativity freely! Let's be better improvisers, teammates, and humans!

August Theme: SILENCE. Let's work on non-verbal communication, building tension, space work, physical comedy, facial expressions, and anything else that doesn't rely on words in our improv AND explore how silence has impacted our lives through storytelling and artivism!

August's Challenge: Let your actions speak louder than words. GO ROGUE by showing, not telling, people how much you value them. It's one thing to say "Oh, you're great," it's another to do something (buy them lunch, get them a thoughtful gift, invite them to hangout) to show them you think they're great. Words of Affirmation are sometimes needed, but this month push yourself to deliver Actions of Affirmation. Anyone can talk a big game, but can you back it up? Try!
