THE STORYTELLER by tells the tale of Sage Singer, a young baker, who befriends Josef Weber, a well-loved man in her community. However, their relationship, and her life as a whole, are forever changed when Josef asks Sage for a favor— to kill him. He confesses to her that he is a former N**i SS soldier, and that he can no longer live with himself and the memories of the horrors he committed. Over the course of the novel, he tells her his story and the things he did. As the granddaughter of a holocaust survivor, his story impacts her deeply, and she is forced to wrestle with her own identity and morality in the face of this decision.
If you enjoyed THE STORYTELLER, you may also be interested in our film, 𝐇𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄𝐇𝐎𝐆. Like Sage, our director Ye’ela Rosenfeld is also the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors. And also like Sage, HANNAH finds herself confronted by the two sides of MR. HOLTZ— the kind and gentle patient, the version of him she knows, and the N**i war criminal, the version she suspects is there, hiding in plain site.
