We all know the series , based on the series by Andrzej Sapkowski 🎲

But did you know there’s a connection between the series and Hans My Hedgehog? “A Question of Price” is the fifth short story in the book “The Last Wish,” and tells the story about how Ciri came to be Geralt’s child of surprise.⁣

If you’re a fan of the Witcher series, and this short story especially, you may be interested in our film 𝐇𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄𝐇𝐎𝐆. The connection to the Hans story is explained by MR. HOLTZ, who says that because of the birthmark on his face, as a child he was called “Hans main Igel” as an insult. This telltale mark is what HANNAH notices during her research, and is what first leads her to suspect MR. HOLTZ’s true identity. ⁣

Why 𝐇𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄𝐇𝐎𝐆? 🎲 ⁣

The name of our film actually comes from German folklore, a fairy tale called “Hans My Hedgehog” (“Hans mein Igel” in German). The tale follows Hans, a half-human half-hedgehog, who eventually sheds his animal skin and becomes human upon winning a princess. When Hans sheds his skin, it is thrown into the fire, and Hans appears as though he has been burned. Once he is cleaned by doctors, he is revealed to be a handsome young man.⁣

MR. HOLTZ explains in 𝐇𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄𝐇𝐎𝐆 that because of the birthmark on his face, as a child he was called “Hans main Igel” as an insult. Unlike Hans, he never loses the dark mark on his skin— there are no physicians to clean him, no happy ending waiting for him. And this telltale mark is what HANNAH notices during her research, that first leads her to suspect MR. HOLTZ’s true identity. ⁣

Meet MR. HOLTZ 🎲 ⁣

The secondary character in 𝐇𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄𝐇𝐎𝐆, MR. HOLTZ an elderly, wheelchair-bound German patient of HANNAH’s in the nursing home. Jolly and kind, and more youthful than his 93 years would suggest, MR. HOLTZ is a prominent figure in the nursing home. He also has a distinctive birthmark over one eye that makes him easily recognizable. ⁣

One night, while conducting research, HANNAH discovers a photo in a history book of a N**i commander with the same birthmark as MR. HOLTZ, and begins to suspect he may be the same man, hiding under false papers. She spends the rest of the evening with him, trying to see under the mask he presents to the world to the dark core she suspects lies within.⁣

Mensch ärgere Dich nicht, which translates to “Man, Don’t Get Angry” is a German board game developed in the early 1900s by Josef Friedrich Schmidt. The game rose to popularity during WWI— soldiers would play it in the trenches to pass the time.⁣

This game has a heavy influence on 𝐇𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄𝐇𝐎𝐆: while HANNAH is trying to get the truth out of MR. HOLTZ, the two of them play the game. MR. HOLTZ goads her into playing, mentioning it’s “like Sorry! but without the cards,” and as the game proceeds he continues to poke fun at her while she’s focused on learning more about who he is, and who he used to be.⁣ As the game draws to a close, some of her frustrations begin to slip out, and the tone of their talk shifts.

THE STORYTELLER by tells the tale of Sage Singer, a young baker, who befriends Josef Weber, a well-loved man in her community. However, their relationship, and her life as a whole, are forever changed when Josef asks Sage for a favor— to kill him. He confesses to her that he is a former N**i SS soldier, and that he can no longer live with himself and the memories of the horrors he committed. Over the course of the novel, he tells her his story and the things he did. As the granddaughter of a holocaust survivor, his story impacts her deeply, and she is forced to wrestle with her own identity and morality in the face of this decision. ⁣

If you enjoyed THE STORYTELLER, you may also be interested in our film, 𝐇𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄𝐇𝐎𝐆. Like Sage, our director Ye’ela Rosenfeld is also the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors. And also like Sage, HANNAH finds herself confronted by the two sides of MR. HOLTZ— the kind and gentle patient, the version of him she knows, and the N**i war criminal, the version she suspects is there, hiding in plain site. ⁣
