Submissions are now open!

Launched in 2023 and supported by Amy Hill, The Solo Project aims to preserve and elevate the art of solo theatrical performance, with a focus on works created by artists of color. The program consists of two parts:

In the first phase, writers will have the opportunity to develop their solo show in a workshop with playwright Lisa Sanaye Dring.

In the second phase, participants will collaborate with mult-hyphenate theatre artist Giovanni Ortega to stage a workshop presentation of their original piece.

About the show :

First commissioned by East West Players in 2022, WHEN YURI MET MALCOLM explores the legacy of Yuri Kochiyama through her friendship with Malcolm X, tracing her journey from Japanese American incarceration camps to a lifetime of activism.

What does it mean to be a citizen of a flawed country, and how much can one person do to change it?

Synopsis: Tam Tran, a UCLA graduate and filmmaker, loves Radiohead and spending time with her best friend Cinthya. Both Tam and Cinthya are undocumented Americans fighting for their right to dream. When Tam is invited to testify before the Senate and the DREAM Act, she's terrified.
