The Robey Theatre Company

The Robey Theatre Company Robey's mission is to foster a community of artists. The Robey Theatre Company is a nonprofit developmental theatre organization.

We were founded in 1994 by veteran actors Ben Guillory and Danny Glover, who believed in the transformational power of plays. The organization began as a readers' circle focusing on “Black Classics.” Due to Black artists' lack of viable opportunities to work in Los Angeles, the founders expanded its mission to fill that void. In 1996, they incorporated The Robey Theatre Company to create more opp

ortunities for Black theatre actors and playwrights. The Robey Theatre Company is committed to racial equality and cultural exchange. We welcome all regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, ability, citizenship, and orientation. We passionately believe that theatre is for everyone! For the past 15 years, The Robey Theatre Company has been housed in The Los Angeles Theatre Center in historic downtown Los Angeles. During the pandemic, all in-person events have been canceled, and all programming has been moved online.

🎭 “The Instrument”

If acting is the soul giving birth to art… then we are the instrument. 🎻

Ben Guillory continues the conversation — reminding us that the actor’s body, breath, and being are the tools of the trade. We train it. We hone it. And through it, we step into worlds only the theatre can offer.

Led by
Ben Guillory
Participants engage in intensive scene work while honing essential theatrical disciplines—including voice, speech, movement, script analysis, and the exploration of human behavior. The workshop provides a collaborative space to take creative risks, strengthen technique, and bring greater truth and nuance to the stage.

“What Leslie Lee has given us is an oh-so-brief glimpse into who we are… and a way to begin to recognize the soulful stuff we’re made of.”

The critics are talking—and audiences are showing up.

Don’t miss Colored People’s Time: A History Play at The Robey Theatre Company.

Powerful. Timely. Unforgettable.
.."the story takes place between the Civil War and Jim Crow—a span of roughly 100 years - requiring every artist involved to deeply understand cultural history and the nuances in speech and behavior that changed over the time period. The production is a series of vignettes exploring the everyday experience of Black people who, through it all, are compelled to become unintended heroes." ....
